No. I was 9 and I lived in Dundry with my parents who weren't into the football - in fact they hated it, because of the bad hooliganism of the 70's - particularly between City and Rovers - and the fact they couldn't drive easily through Bedminster on a Saturday afternoon! Top summer though - the very best weather EVER and still talked about today I always identified myself with City - at Dundry primary school you were either City or Rovers and we had a few playground 'scuffles' with the Rovers fans - I don't think anyone ever mentioned Man United, Arsenal or Chelsea back then - the only non-Bristol team that ever got mentioned was Liverpool, as they were winning everything at that time. I only really became a 'proper' fan when I was about 14 and my 17-year-old mate would drive me down to games. By then it was all over and we were dropping through the leagues I wonder if I will ever get another chance to see the top flight, having missed the first?
I remember 1966 better than '76. We climbed over the railings to hail Big John and the team. I can't remember in 76 whether we all crowded on to the pitch.
Were those the days when Joe Royle played for us and Paul Randall played for the Gas? Wasn't there a comic strip ' Rah Rah Randall' in the Beano or the Dandy or some similar kids comic?
I was there, just about got in the ground when Clive Whitehead scored, I was only little then so by got moved a significant distance by the absolutely rammed crowd. Ah them was the days... Joe Royle came the season after we got promoted if I remember correctly and anyone who was there will never forget the 4 goals he scored for us on his debut. Sadly he was considerably less prolific afterwards. The Gas were churning out half decent strikers by conveyor belt over a long period around then, Randall being just one of many. They all knew where the back of the net was and especially against us. Meanwhile, anyone remember Steve Johnson for us...?
The goal from Whitehead was a cracker, but there were still some squeaky bum moments throughout the rest of the game until the final whistle.
I was there as well in the East End as usual. Saw the goal but after that I think everyone - including the players - were crapping themselves!! Fun on the pitch afterwards though!! 20th April has been a memorable anniversary for me; joined a job in 1980 expecting to stay a couple of years, but finally left in 2009!! Got married to my first wife on 20th April 1985. She was an evil witch - perhaps the fact that 20th April is also Adolf Hitlers birthday had something to do with it!!
