Thought I would check the history for the last 10 seasons of what teams who were 3rd at xmas and where they finished at the end of the season. Season.... 3rd at xmas.. Finished 04/05....... Hereford......... 2nd (Failed in the play off semi's) 05/06....... Exeter............. 7th (Missed the play offs by 11 points) 06/07....... York................ 4th (Failed in the play offs semi's) 07/08....... Stevenage...... 6th (Missed the play offs by 2 points) 08/09....... Torquay.......... 4th (WON THE PLAY OFFS) 09/10....... York................ 5th (Failed in the play offs final) 10/11....... Luton.............. 3rd (Failed in the play offs final) 11/12....... Southport....... 7th (Missed the play offs by 5 points) 12/13....... Wrexham........ 5th (Failed in the play offs final) 13/14....... Grimsby........... 4th (Failed in the play offs semi's) So, out of the last 10 seasons... 3 teams in 3rd at xmas failed to even make the play offs. 3 teams in 3rd at xmas reached the play offs but failed to reach the final. 4 teams in 3rd at xmas reached the play offs and 3 of these lost the final and just 1 won it. 0 teams in 3rd at xmas managed to win the league. Just 1 team in the last 10 seasons managed to go up who were 3rd at xmas. Merry xmas everyone!!! FFS
So the odds must be good for the Gas, because we are a Bristol team and Bristol teams buck the trend. NB. Bristol City were bottom at Christmas last year and were only the fourth team in 21 years to avoid relegation.
It's a marathon, not a sprint and I'm sure we'll get there... probably through the playoffs. But there are definitely four or five sides who look strong contenders and we need to improve a bit to get over the line. What happened to the team top at Christmas?
where can you find this info CJS? Would be nice to see what happens in our leage to 1st position at Xmas. Although we proved last year these stats count for nothing!
Leyton Orient in League One... Watford in The Championship... Wycombe in League Two, spring to mind as Christmas leaders who have fallen away...
Yep they count for nothing indeed. But I like these sorts of things to be honest Season..... Top at xmas........ Finished 04/05....... Luton.................. 1st (Champions) 05/06....... Swansea............. 6th (Failed in the play offs final) 06/07....... Nottm Forest....... 4th (Failed in the play offs semi's) 07/08....... Nottm Forest....... 2nd (Runners up) 08/09....... Leicester............. 1st (Champions) 09/10....... Leeds.................. 2nd (Runners up) 10/11....... Brighton.............. 1st (Champions) 11/12....... Charlton.............. 1st (Champions) 12/13....... Sheff Utd............. 5th (Failed in the play offs semi's) 13/14....... Leyton Orient...... 3rd (Failed in the play offs final) 0 teams top at xmas failed to make the play offs. 4 teams top at xmas reached the play offs. 2 of them lost in the semi's and the other 2 lost the final. So none of these won promotion. 6 teams top at xmas managed to win automatic promotion. 4 of these ended champions. If there was a point to these stats then you have 100% chance of finishing top 6. 60% chance of securing an automatic spot Got these stats from this site http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/league-one/2011-2012/table you can change the season and change the dates to what date you want within that season
Season..... Top at xmas..... Finished 04/05....... Barnet.............. Champions 05/06....... Accrington........ Champions 06/07....... Oxford.............. 2nd (Failed in the play offs semi's) 07/08....... Aldershot.......... Champions 08/09....... Burton.............. Champions 09/10....... Oxford.............. 3rd (Won the play off final) 10/11....... Wimbledon....... 2nd (Won the play off final) 11/12....... Wrexham......... 2nd (Failed in the play offs semi's) 12/13....... Grimsby............ 4th (Failed in the play offs semi's) 13/14....... Cambridge....... 2nd (Won the play offs final) 0 teams top at xmas failed to make the play offs. 4 teams top at xmas ended up champions. 3 teams top at xmas failed to make the play off final. 3 teams top at xmas made the final and they all won it. So none of them lost in the final. Means 7 teams top at xmas won promotion. Worth to note that the team top at xmas over the last 5 seasons failed to actually remain top at the end of the season.
Why not? Stats are fascinating and I'm in awe of those who are good at stats presentation/analysis as I'm not!
Of course I have P49. I done MOST (not all) of my xmas shopping by August. Also cards are sent at the start of December No I dont want to take AMOT's title away Sorry Statto No probs But last season only 3 or 4 survived relegation who were bottom of League 1 in the last 20 years. Not good survival odds. City made it though when odds were against them. We could breaks the odds ourselves
