Come back and post again when you've had time to arrange your thoughts.

Please don't write this. It's actually rather annoying. Just write agreed or I agree.

Fonte did not know how to deal with Roberts at all. He kept trying to go shoulder to shoulder with him.

I very rarely post on here following defeats, because I don't want to read the same old tedious and misguided threads full of moaning and finger-pointing, but after having calmly analysed the last few games, I have come to what I feel is a fair conclusion:

Fonte is not good enough for a first team place. We never look comfortable at the back, and no matter how much we dominate a game, it always looks like a quick break from the opposition or just a hopeful punt up field could undo us. Time and time again, strikers are getting in behind the back line and scoring undeserved goals. For most of the season, we've more than made up for this with some excellent attacking flair, and we showed some of that today, but at this point of the season we need solidity and we don't have it. We need two centre-backs who don't get caught out of position and who can out-muscle opposing strikers 9 out of 10 times in the air or on the ground. Unfortunately, we only have one of those.

I shall add another dimension to my outrage , we are two one footed how many times does play break up beacuse these professionals do not have enough confidence to pass/shot on their weaker foot ?

Yes, great performance. The mistake I thought had the greatest impact was that slack cross-field pass in the first half that lead to Roberts' goal. Was under no pressure, and not even the only pass on - was just needless. Was that Fox? Was about the only foot we put wrong in that first half, and boy, did it show that one mistake is all it takes in football. If we'd scored first, result may have been very different.

If Fonte had been that slack and made that mistake for the earlier goal in the sequence, it would have been a different story in terms of my annoyance. But we'd lost it already, that just put the cherry on top by that point - annoying for the casual who flicks through the scorelines, as it doesn't tell the story of the game, but still, the game had been lost by then. Everything still to play for - and a bit of damaged pride, in that we have to accept we're not the best team in the league. Nor will we ever get to sing "We are Southampton, we're top of the league" again, I imagine. But hopefully in a good way, in that we'll be Premiership perennials from next season on.

We have played worse than this and won. If you are a boo boy maybe you should change your allegiance, everyone makes mistakes but think of all the good moments they have brought you so far this season. I thought we played well and Reading were solid and took their chances; 1-3 was a little harsh.

1-3 was perfectly right and fair , they scored 3 poached goals and no complaints , we had the ball but did not create out and out chances consistently did we ?

No, he is right - Fonte could not control Roberts all night (well, until he went off). Roberts was hugely effective, and had a higher conversion rate than Rickie.

I agree. They're all legends. Let's hope Nigel can build them back up, or hopefully he didn't build them up to treat this game as a cup final.

What did Lambert do that Roberts didn't do better?

Roberts finished his chance, Lambert got one in about 3/4 decent chances.

Roberts had one of the best centre halls in the league in his pocket.

Lambert was dealt with, to relative success, by Kasper Gorkss.

Lambert was decent, but Roberts was superb.
