I have noticed over the last couple of seasons that managers in the Premier League have again started tinkering with their defensive formations and playing 3 at the back is again becoming popular.

Man City most famously have used the formation both successfully and unsucessfully in recent months, Liverpool used it successfully in yesterdays draw against Chelsea, AVB admitted in todays Sun they have been training using the 3 at the back formation, Swansea used it on a few occasions last season and even Fergie has used it in the last couple of seasons on more than one occasion.

Now I am in no way saying 3 at the back will solve QPR's defensive problems, but away from home having 3 centre backs may enable us to deal with set piece and open play crosses more effectively which seems to be where we are conceding the large bulk of our goals by not clearing our lines. We have ready made wing backs in Fabio, Traore and Bosingwa and see no reason why, in training, MH should not be trying out different formations in order to solve this issue.

I can't see it doing us no harm but the he would play a 5 4 1 formation with Adel being at the top of a diamond midfield and again we have a isolated striker that has bee our prolem all season, we have play a lone striker against two big powerful center halfs and get no change. Where has Bobby Zamora gone that played against Arsenal last season because he played a blinder that day and got everything and held the ball well, now he can even hold his place in the team down.

Even when everyone is fit I do not believe we currently have 2 PL standard centre backs at the club let alone 3.

I posted something along these lines last season mortlake. It was after Wigan used it so effectively in their excellent end of season run of winning games. I can't remember the specifics but better football brains than mine pointed out why it wouldn't be good for us and gave it the thumbs down.

I agree. It is an area of particular weakness but 3 from Nelson, Mbia, Ferdinand or Onohua will have more solidity than 2 from that group. Our full backs do not get into the right position when defending against a winger who is running at them, therefore more often than not the winger creates enough space to put a cross into the box which in turn creates the problems as we are not clearing the high ball. Putting an extra man in the middle of a weak defence should hopefully sure things up in the short term and improve confidence and tactical awareness.

It's what I had been saying all along. But, TF seems to think our defense finally looks OK, so I doubt we'll go to it.

I'd be willing to try Cesar up front if I thought it would get us a win!

With our suspect full backs it wouldn't work, however this might if all were fit:

    ------------------Cesar-----------------

    -----------Nelsen--M'Bia--Hill------------

    -Dyer--Diakite--Granero--Faurlin--Fabio-

    ----------------Taraabt----------------

    -------------Zamora-------------------

We're bad enough with four defenders, god knows what we would be like if we had three!

It takes weeks and weeks of preparation to play 3 at the back and it often just reverts to 5. It also often has the opposite effect of its designed purpose and you find yourself more often than not with not enough players forward and caught on the back foot with support.

Nice in theory but it would end up with a flat five and no width.

    Weve tried that all season!

We havent even got 2 good CBs so it will be a farce if we have to play 3 there.

I like it. Hoilett and Taarabt to share the goalscoring duties. Are they intelligent enough?

Didn't see much of stoke but what I saw was Adel playing in every position and holding on to the ball for too long but having said that he looked far more interested than a lot of others. Also noticed Ali play a few shocking passes, looked like a player who'd been on the bench for years.

But the main theme again this game was the lack of numbers going forward, it looks at times as though they've been told no more than 4 in attack on a break. If were going to play Hoilett then he needs some support.

This. It's really hard to adopt new formation. And what if Dyer gets injured which is very likely? You can't expect Bosingwa to be our wing back. Then Fabio could go on the right but Traore can't make the whole match as a full back with winger in front of him and I doubt he could be able to cover the left flank by himself
