Morning guys! I'm curious, does anyone have any idea why Harry's so keen on switching formation? I'm a little baffled to be honest, just because we've got the players to play 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 without making dramatic changes to the team (allbeit no dramatic changes have been made so far!), and we have 2 wingers in Phillips and Hoillett that have premier league experience and quality, but to me are so attack-minded that they need someone behind them. We've also got Premier league standard full backs in Simpson and Yun, allbeit that Harry doesn't seem to fancy Yun that much. Do we want to keep all 4 of the above happy, and if so how do we manage it? Is the old dog picking up new tricks having seen how well the Dutch and others did at the World Cup, or is it something more thought out than that? (I don't mean that to sound as anti-Harry as it does, hopefully you see what I mean!) All in all the change had left me a little confused and bemused. Thoughts please...!
It's a system that gives flexibility and avoids the midfield being over-run as in 4-4-2 or 1-1. It's reliant on the two wing-backs dropping back to cover defensively when defending and then when they attack one of the midfielders (probably Ale) drops back to cover the three centrebacks against a counter-attack. At PL level the wing-backs need to be very capable so don't be surprised to see new faces in those positions...
It was one position where we had no cover. Wingbacks are a very demanding role, therefore cover is crucial.
I'm ready to be shot down, but I think HR has decided to play with three centre halves as this is the only way he could get Rio in the team. It can esily be changed to a back five as well. Another plus factor for Harry.
I like it. We've struggled to score for too long and think 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 could be the answer. My worry is, do we have the midfield for this system? P.s. Traore has always been a confused left back. Wing back should suit him perfectly.
Do you fit your players to a formation or a formation to your players. We have 3 good Cb in Rio\Caulker and Ned with cover from Hill and Dunne, wings backs look good as well Isla (fingers crossed)\Simpson and Traore\Yun. The player kinda fit this formation.
If Hoddle is coming in as a coach as is rumoured 3-5-2 is a system he played particularly with England...
Agreed. We needed cover for Simpson with 4 at the back as well, and a someone better going forward will be ideal.
Isla plays left back adwell as both wings. Maybe isla will be other side. Cant see Simo out of the squad
3-5-2 seems such a good system on paper and when done well gives a great blend of cover and attacking options. I just hope our players can adapt!!
No better time to change the system. We need new squad players, so buy for the system and squad rotation/substitution. Could work with right cover and it seems line we're trying to do just that (still a way to go with confirmed signings though).
The misconceptions of the 3-5-2 formation are the wing backs. The germans relied on one of their defensive midfielders to drop in between centre backs which then forms a loose 4 instead of their wide players making it a 5. You need two defensive midfielders in this formation and two natural widemen like phillips and hoillet.
