Was talking with my brother today about football in 1966, regarding both City and England, and it will be 60 years ago very soon. We have not googled it, as we wanted to test our memories, but we think Geoff Hurst is the only member of the world cup winners left, but their must be some squad players still alive? Anyone, without googling. Then City from 66, Waggy, Butler and Simpkin we believe are still going strong. Any more? Then last point how about the club getting our 66 boys back on the pitch for our first game in 2026?
I know the answer to the first question as read it last week.. there's two other England squad members still alive, both mid-80s, and both, from memory, have the highest number of appearances still for their respective clubs, Southampton and Liverpool. Strangely enough, England have the fewest surviving number of players out of all the countries that attended the WC.
Simpkin might have been airbrushed out in recent years, dodgy 'massage' parlours and what have you, got sent down for it. Good player for us in his day though.
My first season watching football as a little kid. City wiping the floor with everyone every week, FA Cup giant killers, England winning the WC, I assumed every season would be like that. Imagine my surprise⦠Bizarrely City beat England in a pre-WC tournament friendly on a local playing field. Was it County Road?
