Championship promotion odds 2021/22 reveal extent of Nigel Pearson's challenge at Bristol City
The Robins finished 19th last season and are not fancied to compete for promotion next season

Having signed a three-year contract shortly before a disastrous 2020/21 season came to a conclusion, Nigel Pearson's mission at Bristol City is clear - get the club promoted.

Lee Johnson had flirted with the prospect several times, coming close in 2017/18 only for a late season collapse, and then again in 2018/19 only to fall short, in-part, due to a lack of firepower.

Pearson has been keen to emphasise that it will take time turning the club around from the misery and mediocrity of the recently-completed campaign into a genuine promotion outfit, as he assembled at Leicester City.

The City manager believes it will take at least four transfer windows for him to get the required squad in terms of quality, numbers and character which means expectations for this coming season are probably the most realistic they've been for years.

Previously, the top six has been almost a minimum but with Pearson's rebuilding project, all that is hoped for is tangible and sustained improvement. Indeed, in a Bristol Live survey, 34% of supporters think City will finish in the top 10 and 33% in mid-table.

The bookmakers place the Robins even lower, as Sky Bet, via Oddschecker, rate City at just 33/1 to win the Championship (which would be some story) and 10/1 to secure promotion - 16th on the list.

Worryingly, they're also only 4/1 to be relegated, a reflection on City's dreadful end to the campaign as they went winless in 10.

I have concerns about next season, however we’ve got rid of around 13 players and as yet we’ve no idea who’s incoming, all the other teams are in a similar situation, so it seems a pointless exercise at the moment to try to predict anything .

Mate, I'm putting up anything I can scrape together to try and keep us going, if I find it I put it up, as you pointed out nothing is available to report except the scraps you are having to read.

I see the odds are putting us in the bottom 6 and makes us one of the 6 favourites for relegation, the doom mongers will have a field day if this occurs, lets hope for some developments soon.

They always put us in the bottom half every year, even when we have just missed out on the play-offs they have us in the bottom half. This is part of the big challenge for NP is to change the perception of little old Bristol

I really hope that is t the case of course, but if it happens it will show the 5 year top half reign of Ashton/Johnson as being rather good.

I hope we never have to admit that about Lee.

I hope this doesn’t turn out to be the case, but even if it does it will still all be the fault of a former manager who “achieved nothing”. This season will tell if getting rid of the LJ/MA was the right or wrong move....

Appreciate that Wiz, I was commenting on the content of the article, not criticising you for putting it up

What’s being done needed to be done regardless, Nige is much higher profile, so likely to attract better players than either LJ or DH.
