I've managed to track down the 2017 Derby entry conditions as fees have gone up this time. They are:

£560 stake to enter (first entry) by noon on December 1st, 2015
£1100 extra if not scratched by noon on March 7th, 2017
£3400 extra if not scratched by noon on May 23rd, 2017
£2800 extra if entry confirmed by noon on May 29th, 2017
Total Cost: £7,860

or

£9000 stake to enter (second entry) by noon on April 4th, 2017
£11250 extra if not scratched by noon on May 23rd, 2017
£2800 extra if entry confirmed by noon on May 29th, 2017
Total Cost: £23,050

or

£85,000 stake if entered by noon on May 29th, 2017

So, by entering as yearlings, you need to end up with more than 3 runners to have saved on entry fees

But you may not even have the right 3 by April 4th. Also as I said those with multiple entries prune them a great deal at the 2nd stage March 2017.

The system is archaic. It should be replaced by one that allows initial entry at perhaps the 1st September of their 2yo careers. That would make the year-end races for 2yos a touch more interesting. In addition as now they can have more expensive late entry stages.

Of course there was a time that (and the initial entry stage was the only allowed one) if the horse's owner died the horse was scratched. Not sure when they stopped that.
