After the debacle last season of racing too many cars on too small an Ovals, leading to the tragic death of Dan Wheldon, it seems the organisers of Indycar still haven't got their act together. After an absence of a couple of years, Indycar has returned to the Belle Isle circuit in Detroit, and it looks like their going to be regretting it. 39 laps into the race, Takuma Sato and James Hinchcliffe have crashed out in similar circumstances, seemingly due to parts of the track being torn up and lodged in the steering, wheels, etc. The race has been red-flagged on lap 45 whilst the track officials work out if they can find a solution to allow them to run the remaining 45 laps. Judging by this video, I'd say the chances are slim! This article also gives some details. Thoughts?
Well....... Pretty shocking really, perhaps the pre-race checks to the track should be adjusted so they actually look at the track. I'm no road expert but those joins couldn't look more dodgy. Did someone turn up in a flat bed the night before with some tarmac "left over from a previous job"?
It was pretty shocking but it's wasn't the first or last time that a circuit has crumbled. A bit daft sticking tarmac in concrete though.
