I'm sure no-one needs reminding what happened to us in 2005,but looking slightly further afield, it was also the year that LFC claimed their 5th European Cup. Nearly every Red I like to talk football with was in Istanbul and I ended up watching it with a bloke who is a life time Evertonian and Red-hater. At half time, much though he was enjoying the humiliation, he agreed that it was a bad night for the EPL and Chelsea would have given a better account of themselves. Then ... Oddly, I found myself supporting Liverpool. There was such an underdog mentality about it all. They pissed me off a little with their "Let's draw the final and get the cup trick" over the next couple of years, but I sort of forgave them. Now we again face a Manchester team on the final day and relegation is looming. Liverpool have a very winnable semi-final and in a one off final anything can happen. So if it does, how would we Saints approach it? Salah and Firmino are superb players and I will be pleased for them. When it comes to ex-Saints I will be able to take Chamberlain picking up a medal, so too Mane, Clyne too. But Lovren, Lallana and Van Dijk? It's the stuff of nightmares! Thoughts? Andiamo a Roma?? Per favore, si prega di battere quei rossi ????
I have always rooted for British clubs in European competitions ever since Celtic broke the ice in 1967. I will be hoping that Arsenal see Wenger out the door in style by winning the Europa League. But Liverpool? After our recent history with them? With that nasty piece of work Klopp prancing and gurning up and down the touchline? Nah, can’t do it. Come on Roma, or better still, let them lose in the final.
So glad you said that. I have always been the same. Even Liverpool in those finals from '77 on when they kept rubbing it in that they were the best team in England. Normally I can share my fellow football fans delight when their team does well. I actually punched the air with delight when Wolves secured the Championship because I know how much it means to a mate who has supported them since1960. Similarly, I can enjoy the "hey what's going on" moment being enjoyed by friends who are City fans. But much though I love the company of my Red friends I cannot feel but dread at the thought of them winning this bloody thing!
I’m with you Chilcs any British team in an international final has my backing. If Liverpool do it I will just think what might have been if Saints had kept the players. At least we can then say say Liverpool couldn’t of done it without our help.
I'll be behind them too. I'll support a British team and as above I will be claiming part of the trophy for Southampton if they win And if they fail then I can just laugh at them and call them ****. win win
I support all British teams in all competitions (and even the ROI if they are all that's available ), especially in football because it can mean keeping our extra European places. But I will switch off the set when Klopp comes on....win or lose...he's a tosser.
I never support English teams in any European competition unless it is Saints. I know far more fans of English clubs who will be gloating ****ers if they managed to win it than I do any of the foreign teams. I also have always liked Roma for some reason so will definitely be supporting them.
I can't support Liverpool, against anyone. I rarely do support any other 'British' team purely because they're British because the whole idea is nonsense with so many foreign players and owners. There are hardly any British clubs, just foreign ones based here so I have no problem supporting Roma against the Bindippers
As has been stated above, I don’t want Liverpool to win anything with Lovren, Lallana and VVD in the side. I could even stretch that to hoping they never win anything again, because of the part they obviously played in tapping up our players. Yes I know they all do it, but they did it over and over again. Come on Roma.
Surely anyone who loves football has to enjoy watching a front three of Salah, Mane and Firminho, regardless of personal feeling? That said, it was nice of the scousers to throw Roma a lifeline just when the tie looked all over.
I don't care who wins the CL - I don't support anyone other than Saints, but jeepers golly gosh is the attacking football that Liverpool play a delight to watch (as a neutral). Absolutely fearsome, and how badly do I wish that Saints played like that - at least with that mindset if not the personnel.
