The BBCs #15 Greatest all time driver (not in order of best) is... http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/18096591 With the list containing so far: 16 Nelson Piquet 17 Emerson Fittipaldi 18 Jack Brabham 19 Graham Hill 20 Jochen Rindt Im Expecting these will also feature in the list: Ayrton Senna Alain Prost Michael Schumacher Jackie Stewart Niki Lauda Fernando Alonso Nigel Mansell Jim Clark Mika Hakkinen Mike Hawthorn John Surtees Phil Hill Juan Manuel Fangio Alberto Ascari ^ and Sebastian Vettel... V Uh oh which world champions are missing out? Keke Rosberg Damon Hill nino Farina Kimi Raikkonen Jaques Villeneuve Denny Hulme James Hunt Mario Andretti Jody Scheckter Alan Jones Jenson Button what about these? Sterling Moss Gilles Villeneuve Rubens Barichello what would your list compose of? Who is your top 20?
For me Jack Brabhams achievements outweigh all other F1 drivers, he won it twice, then built his own car and did it agian, no one else has ever managed that feat, although McLaren nearly did. And don't you rate Jim Clark?
Fittipaldi tried and failed Ive probably forgotten a few others too but please... make your own top 20 lists.. ignore mine =)
Seb will be 14th you'll see, you don't just put a double WDC out of any top 20 unless you have issues with the guy. Both him and Lewis need more years to prove themselves in pretty much every situation anyway to get higher up into the top 10, undoubtedly I expect them both to do so at the end of their careers when it's all over. Alonso will probably just end up either in front or behind Niki Lauda. Damon and Hawthorn in my opinion do not deserve to be in the top 20 if they get selected. Damon was highly overrated and Hawthorn I read was a major tool in F1 and was **** scared of Fangio and Moss. He also caused the le mans 1954 horror crash and they have video evidence to prove it. Yet Jaguar denied it and continued to race, it was reported Hawthorn became highly depressed after that little stunt and was never the same. Kimi and Farina deserve those places more that those 2 as Kimi was destined to win a WDC like Seb, but didn't have the luck with McLaren and Farina was the nuts before F1 in the 50's and is the only guy in history to win the WDC in his rookie season
I've not checked the link but if that list is yours, Bando; how on earth can you forget these three?: Clark Fangio Nuvolari* The trouble with the concept of 'legend' is that it depends upon memory. And for any legend to form, it must become part of folklore; being passed through successive generations. Thus it is that true greats of the past tend to fade when compared to more recent personalities who are still fresh in young minds. *Grand Prix racing was not called 'Formula 1' in his day; but some might say 'Nuvo' was/is the greatest legend (in the truest sense of the word) motor sport has or will ever have!
Indeed Nuvolari was the greatest, he helped Fangio get where he did and the one driver Fangio himself said was better than him and a great friend. Fangio was great, but it was Nuvolari that taught him to be better.That kind of teaching would of been in the calibre of Clark helping to try and improve Senna even further! And that he was a legend across the Motorsport world, that would of been on the scale of Martians from Mars knowing who Schumacher was.
Fangio is there! Ive just picked 14 to add on to the BBCs allready reveald 6 who I bet they will go with. admittedly I missed Clark completely Basically this thread was supposed to get people entering their own top 20 to rival the BBCs but nobody has done that yet Maybe I should edit my OP EDIT: Fixed
Without wishing to divert this thread in any way, I feel I should respond to something above: I completely, utterly and fundamentally disagree with this part of your comment Silver! Here is a diametrically opposed counter to your statement; if for no other reason than to balance the books: (it is not intended to ignite sub-debate, which may warrant its own thread). In my opinion, Damon was highly under-rated! In fact I think he is one of the most under-rated of all time!
OMG... I missed Vettel from the List! Wait a min... How the hell did hamilton get into the top 20!!!! Benson!!!!!
For my own interest in seeing how the statistical "best" differs from our perception here's the top 20 in terms of number of races won

[SUB]1 [/SUB] [SUB]SCHUMACHER Michael [/SUB] [SUB]91[/SUB]

[SUB]2[/SUB] [SUB]PROST Alain[/SUB] [SUB]51[/SUB]

[SUB]3[/SUB] [SUB]SENNA Ayrton[/SUB] [SUB]41 [/SUB]

[SUB]4[/SUB] [SUB]MANSELL Nigel[/SUB] [SUB]31[/SUB]

[SUB]5[/SUB] [SUB]ALONSO Fernando[/SUB] [SUB]28[/SUB]

[SUB]6[/SUB] [SUB]STEWART Jackie[/SUB] [SUB]27[/SUB]

[SUB]7[/SUB] [SUB]CLARK Jim[/SUB] [SUB]25 [/SUB]

[SUB]= [/SUB] [SUB]LAUDA Niki[/SUB] [SUB]25[/SUB]

[SUB]9 [/SUB] [SUB]FANGIO Juan Manuel[/SUB] [SUB]24 [/SUB]

[SUB]10 [/SUB] [SUB]PIQUET Nelson[/SUB] [SUB]23[/SUB]

[SUB]11 [/SUB] [SUB]HILL Damon[/SUB] [SUB]22[/SUB]

[SUB]= [/SUB] [SUB]VETTEL Sebastian[/SUB] [SUB]22[/SUB]

[SUB]13 [/SUB] [SUB]HAKKINEN Mika[/SUB] [SUB]20[/SUB]

[SUB]14 [/SUB] [SUB]RAIKKONEN Kimi[/SUB] [SUB]18[/SUB]

[SUB]15 [/SUB] [SUB]HAMILTON Lewis[/SUB] [SUB]17[/SUB]

[SUB]16 [/SUB] [SUB]MOSS Stirling[/SUB] [SUB]16[/SUB]

[SUB]17 [/SUB] [SUB]HILL Graham[/SUB] [SUB]14[/SUB]

[SUB]= [/SUB] [SUB]BRABHAM Jack[/SUB] [SUB]14[/SUB]

[SUB]= [/SUB] [SUB]FITTIPALDI Emerson[/SUB] [SUB]14[/SUB]

[SUB]20 [/SUB] [SUB]ASCARI Alberto[/SUB] [SUB]13[/SUB]

[SUB]= [/SUB] [SUB]COULTHARD David[/SUB] [SUB]13[/SUB]

[SUB]= [/SUB] [SUB]BUTTON Jenson[/SUB] [SUB]13[/SUB]

And to please El Bando my own opinion. Which was hard to chose. I ended up with 39 names when listing greats. Tough to whittle down. Honerable mentions to Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Damon Hill, Mario Andretti and Johen Rindt. 20. John Surtees 19. Kimi Raikkonen 18. Stirling Moss 17. Emerson Fittipaldi 16. Alberto Ascari 15. Graham Hill 14. Jack Brabham 13. Mika Hakkinen 12. Sebastian Vettel 11. Fernando Alonso 10. I'm not going to do a top 20, as the differences in era's makes it hard to pick only 20 drivers. I'm suprised by Benson's restraint though, i felt sure he'd have Hamilton in the top 5.
"The BBC F1 team were asked to provide their own personal top 20s, which were combined to produce a BBC list." Must have been out voted Also his name is Lewis Hamilton, I have been reading Benson's blogs for years and I assumed his name actually was "Lewis Hamilton, 2008 world champion".
If you're doing legends, I don't any of the current drivers should be included in the list barring Schumacher. They will achieve their legendary status in time. Let them finish building their legacy before slapping them in that list.
well I think there is 15 Multiple world champions who deserve an automatic place in the top 20, that would include Alonso, Schumacher and Vettel. The other 5 must have noteable carears like: Rindt Mansell Surtees Phil Hill the 20th is Hazy...
