Ward will be given the option of signing two new strikers after deals to terminate the contracts of Garry Kenneth and Matt Gill were completed ahead of the January transfer window.

Wantaway defender Kenneth, 26, who requested a transfer in October, finally accepted an offer to terminate a lucrative contract 18 months early yesterday following several weeks of talks.

Midfielder Gill, 33, will also officially leave the Memorial Stadium on January 2 after agreeing a compensation package to end his time at the club six months early prior to leaving to join Exeter City on loan on October 18.

Chairman Nick Higgs, meanwhile, confirmed last night that he departures of two of the club's higher-earners paves the way for Ward to redistribute the funds on bolstering his strikeforce in a bid to ward off the threat of getting embroiled in a relegation scrap.

    Higgs said:
"We have got some flexibility to bring players in during the January transfer window and that is what we'll be looking to do. We are quite happy with the bulk of the squad, but we may need to bring in a striker or two. That's where we are. It is really fine margins at the moment. We are losing by the odd goal or drawing games we should be winning. It is all about scoring goals for us because our defensive record is one of the better ones in the league. I'm still hoping the strikers we have will suddenly click. We have some good strikers, but it is not quite working at the moment. We can't be complacent and in January we will be looking to improve that situation."

When asked if turning on-loan Preston striker Chris Beardsley into a permanent signing was one of the January window deals being considered...

    Higgs replied:
"That is a possibility. We have had discussions about several players, but what we can do is guided by who is available and willing to drop down to League Two and come to us in the situation we are in."

We need a striker with pace if we're going to sign Beardsley.

And hopefully one that knows that you need to put the ball between those two white vertical things called posts....

May I be the first to commiserate with you on your recent tragic banning from the Teds' board. It must have been a grievous loss for you to be so poorly treated by those humourless red-breasted goat fiddlers <laugh>

Apparently so. It's clear that the world will end if they don't have a new Mod, and a full blown electoral process to go with it.
