I got the following sent to me via Facebook & thought this would be as good a place to put it as anywhere:

    John Clegg

We are hitting £1.42 a litre in some areas now and soon we will be faced with paying £1.50 per litre. So here’s the idea:

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy petrol on a certain day campaign' that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.

Please read it and join in!

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS - not sellers control the market place. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one) i.e. ESSO and BP.

If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!!

Now, don't wimp out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to ten people. The person who sent it to me also sent it to 29 other people. If all of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 100) it will have reached 300...and if those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on. By the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it.....

    THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all YOU have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all (and not buy at ESSO/BP). How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell,Asda,Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Jet etc.
    i.e. Boycott BP and Esso.

Absolutely pointless, the extortionate prices are due mainly to tax, your targeting the wrong people with this, you should be rallying against the government and not the super majors if you want a price reduction.

Esso and BP = the same company? No they are not.

Many people get fuel at supermarkets. Who is their supplier?

This will never work. You're working under the assumption that if people aren't buying fuel (which won't stop happening because people need it) then supply is going to stop completely. Why on Earth would that happen? Also, if everybody starts buying fuel from just supermarkets, then what do you think is going to happen to the supermarket prices? The maths also doesn't take into account how many people there are in the UK; there are just over 62 million people living in the UK. Not all of those people drive, not all of those people are of a legal age to drive. Then you have to account for people reading this knowing the same people, which then gives you cross overs. It's moot, simply because most people will take one look at this and dismiss it within seconds.

BP and Esso aren't the same company; Exxon and Mobil merged, but it has nothing to do with BP.

And even if it somehow, impossibly worked and loads of people flocked to get fuel, how long would it take for the companies to put the price back up again? Not really a solution, just a way to get one slightly cheaper tank of fuel while feeling like you cheated the system. Which you didn't because you don't understand how wrong the principle actually is.

This is a great idea, lets get a british company shut down so we can spend our money with all the foreign companies instead! Fantastic. When do we start?

Without the tax petrol per litre is cheaper than milk

The biggest reason for rising prices is usually the state of the economy not "greedy oil companies"

There are 15,000 UK Employees at BP,

    Supply and demand, simple.

Unfortunately, taxes do make up the majority of the cost of fuel.

As a nation, if we wanted we could have 60p per litre fuel but we'd have to increase taxes elsewhere (maybe put basic rate of income
    tax back up to 25%).

Or we could reduce government spending by the equivalent in lost tax revenue - but that's another debate.

It really pisses me off when motorists complain about tax on petrol. It is completely the fairest way to pay for road maintenance and new roads. If you use it, you pay for it - build a ****ing bridge and get over it.

If it all went on road maintenance you'd have a point.

I think it was just after I started driving, which was 2006. So the better part of a decade, yeah. They'll never be that cheap again. The only thing that could offset it is that the value of our currency goes up. Which I can't see happening in the near future.

I like Top Gear, but I totally see where you are coming from...

Why not put them side by side (Clarkson crouching of course) and use 1 bullet?

Save the other for someone like Luis Suarez, you can blame him going down on a dive...
