It will be 10 years ago that the mighty Leeds Utd, the then Premier League leaders, flew into town (apart from the 4 who drove down because they refused to fly with the rest of the squad ) to take on Cardiff City in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. They thought they just had to turn up to book a place in the 4th round... How wrong they were. A great day out and some great memories: The atmosphere that day at Ninian Park The Lee Bowyer chant (still gives me a giggle) David O'Leary claiming Leeds FA Cup run will start and end in Cardiff <----- spot on David Leo doing 'The Leo' Kavanagh's free kick ...and Scott Young hitting the winner (not great quality vid)
Arguably Sam's finest hour. I wonder if he ever thought that the Leed's chairman on that day would effectively oust him at NP?
Didn't see it live as I was out. Recorded it and watched it late that night, not knowing the score. Remember thinking with 5mins to go that we'd done our selves proud and that going to Elland Road would be a money spinner. Then I woke the houshold up by whooping and hollering as I bounced around the room in celebration as Young's header hit the back of the net. In the dog house for a bit. Wasn't it at that game that one of the commentators was having a pop at Sam and said, 'Look at him walking round like he owns the place', at which point the co-commentator pointed out, 'he does'.
MM to this tune http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBoI8h4AAjI "Heeeey, Lee Bowyer...OOOH AAAH. I wanna knoooooow, why you're not in jail" (not long after he was cleared of the alleged GBH/racist charge) JH: I can remember he said the atmosphere at NP that day was worse...probably explains his sudden departure after 10 mins remote: I think the entire media had a pop that day...and for weeks after. Andy Gray was the only one I can remember who didn't.
Was fishing over in France a few years ago and he was fishing the same lake, quite a nice bloke actually and do you know it never crossed my mind to mention the game, he was playing for the Hammers at the time.
One of my fave games even managed to pick up £12 off the pitch the Leeds fans donated, and I was always told that a Yorkshire man was a scot with the generosity squeezed out of them they were more then generous that night
Quite incredible to think what's happened to both clubs since. These days a win over Cardiff by the once "mighty" Leeds would be seen as quite an upset.
One of the great nights. Ferdinand went off very early in the game. Got done by Gavin Gordon. They totally bottled it. Cried like babies after as well. David O'Leary is someone I have zero time for after that night. Im glad he proved to be a useless manager. They never recovered from that night.
