I was tarmacking roads back then. Can remember working about West Belfast and everyone had their flags and 'good luck' messages hanging from their windows, still haven't seen anything like it since (or before). I fell out with the wife for about two days after she tried to console me with "it's just a football game" just after the final whistle
Who went? I had a chance of cheap flights when Celtic where playing Boavista - second leg - but I bottled it.
I took a gamble and booked flights, hotel and tickets after the first leg against Liverpool. Just in case.....it didn't feel like a gamble at the time.
i was in the isle of man at the time and i mentioned the possibility of going to the mrs who promptly told me to **** off there was no chance of me going to spain to watch football. i still blame myself, i watched all the other games in the bedroom of my 1 bed flat, that game i had to go to the pub to watch it...
The day after the game... Possibly the most fun day I ever had. They sprinkled fairy dust over Seville and changed thousands of fat stinking Scotch into American students on Spring Break.... WOOOO SPRING BREAK.
I was a first year in Uni. Got steaming in the Bobbin and threw a brick through a window in anger. Woke up covered in red sick from drinking too many diesels
10 years ago today, I flew into Gibraltar and hired a car. Drove up to Seville, parked by the river, got had over by some conman parking attendant - well, my mate did - and started drinking by the cathedral. Went to the party in the park later that night and crashed out in our car/ hotel combination. It was busy enough with the Hoops on the Tuesday, but FFS was it rammed with Celtic shirts on the day of the game. The new shirt came out a day or two before, but most people seemed to be wearing them.
We flew to Malaga on the Saturday before it and stayed in Benalmadena, for a week. Drove to Seville through the Tuesday night, got there early morning. Amazing day, shame about the result, but a once in a lifetime experience. Was emotionally and physically exhausted on the car journey back to the hotel. Then just partied again until we left the following saturday.
UEFA Chief of security: "I don't believe 50,000 fans will travel to Seville. That is madness, it's an exaggeration." I remember getting to the hotel. We had 2 rooms booked. The receptionist had the what the fuuuuck look on his face as they had double and treble booked rooms because the mayor of Seville had said something similar to the above. We had a decent hotel too, right across from the Betis ground. Same hotel as jim kerr, roy keane and one Billy McNeill.
