This is Bristol not ****ing Amsterdam ! 11) Bristol Rovers just in case I forget Have a go or add different choices

Like 1) Bristol Rovers 2) Loads of open spaces and the city’s topography – hills and water and great views. 3) Cultural mix 4) Historic buildings/ships – much of the urban architecture is great 5) Number of good pubs, except The Robins, obviously. 6) Good restaurants 7) Local cider 8) Bansky – yes, I’d ban Sky too – it’s a bloody disgrace that you can’t watch the Ashes on terrestrial TV. 9) Pieminister 10) Clifton Suspension Bridge Dislike 1) Bristol City 2) Nepotistic tax exiles who reckon (incorrectly) that they can buy success and install their idiot offspring in senior positions so that they don’t have to go out into the real world and earn a living. 3) George Ferguson and most other local politicians 4) The traffic in general 5) Government forgetting that there’s a city called Bristol and pumping billions into other cities whilst ignoring us. 6) Tony Robinson – weird, cloying little man. 7) Lack of an Arena – every other major city in Britain has one, why not us? 8) Lack of world class concert facilities – why stick a bronze-clad extension on the Colston Hall when the interior desperately needs renovating 9) Piss poor and expensive public transport – not about to be improved by the woeful Bus Rapid Transit concept. First Bus should be booted out of the city 10) Pointless cycle lanes. This is Bristol not ****ing Amsterdam ! 11) Bristol City just in case I forgot

Likes numerous A real dislike is the way Bristol has been defaced by regeneration and commercial self interest. Harbourside is a mess based on the south bank of LONDON!!! Bucking the trend I think George Ferguson is doing a good job, and unlike the political parties is getting out about amongst all social classes. He is everywhere unlike Leslie, Williams etc, OUR members of parliament we never see locally. I also think that the anarchists, BS3, cyclists, kebele, left wingers, greens, stokes croft, street artists, vegetarians/vegans and their ilk are part of the tapestry of what makes Bristol a great place to be. Kingswood should be bombed.
Would you let a child cycle around Temple Meads cycle paths? Even the cycle paths are dangerous. The proliferation of drivers from Eastern europe has seen cycle paths being used as an extension of the road. Paths are used as a form of self preservation. Bristol needs more bikes, more bikes on roads, more kids getting away from sedentary lifestyles. Being fit and healthy is good, obesity now a national trait isn't. The army dropping fitness requirements for todays lard arses says it all about todays softie kids.
I agreed with you until you got to that point. I work in Stokes Croft, and it's an absolute joke. Aside from a few good bars and shops, there are far too many drunks, far too many run-down buildings (apparently spray-painting everything doesn't make it better), and far too many trustifarians in the area. It's a nice place to be if you pop by now and then, but if you're there every day you soon realise that there's a whole lot of nothing there, and that it's actually not the nicest or safest place to be. Case in point. When I was walking back to my car in Stokes Croft, from Cabot Circus I saw a man walking out of the bear pit with his kid. Some hippy lady who'd clearly had either too much to drink decided it'd be a good idea to dance around this guy while someone in the bear pit was playing his guitar. The guy clearly wasn't impressed, nor was his kid. I've cycled a few times, and I largely agree with you. However, I'll say that the biggest danger to cyclists is probably other cyclists. Every time I've cycled in I've seen some horrendous cycling that has endangered people on cars, bikes and people on foot. I've also seen my fair amount of accidents where the cyclist has been totally at fault, only for them to cycle off while someone lies injured or while someones car is smashed up. I'd support bikes in Bristol, but only if it were better policed, and only if it becomes mandatory for cyclists to have insurance.
[NSFW][/NSFW]This is a view from someone born and bred in Dorset: Like: 1. Bristol City! 2. The People (a bit brown-nosy I know, but Bristol is a friendly place) 3. Pubs / Bars in Central Bristol 4. Living Room Restaurant 5. The Grain Barge 6. Suspension Bridge 7. The Banter between City and Rovers 8. Pieminister 9. Venues to see Shows/Gigs etc 10. Clifton Dislikes 1. Town & Village Green!!! 2. Poor Leadership in Council 3. Violence between City and Rovers 4. Lack of Big Arena 5. Traffic System You will notice that I have not put Bristol Rovers on my list of dislikes. If I did not live in Dorchester, and could choose anywhere in the UK, I would live in Bristol (and not just because of the football - my wife is not into football, and she thinks the same)
I have insurance ... But its not mandatory for cyclists to have insurance in europe. It would simply create less cycling. From decades of cycling I can't think of any instance of another cyclist being a significant risk. I have almost monthly experiences from cars and buses where the highway code becomes something notional from those driving a ton, and tons of metal. I won't let my son cycle at all on his own or on the roads, as a child I was allowed that freedom, its sad that kids now lose that experience due to many drivers having an attitude that sees cyclists a pariahs. Stokes Croft is greatly improved, I worked there in the eighties and it was truly dangerous. The place is run down because of the council and large scale ownership of buildings being in the hands of investors e.g Hong Kong based sitting on building based assets and doing little with them. The numbers of people with obvious social problems is due to the unusual amount of agencies/services in the area dealing with drugs, alcohol, homelessness, the vulnerable etc. Its lopsided, based on social nimbyism [put the services all in one area not Clifton!], and the visually evident consequences are logical. I have seen things around there which are truly sickening, bizarre, but its still a vibrant place that ebbs and flows despite its problems. I have also witnessed a "Big society" that show individuals, and collectives combining to improve their community without looking to gain from it financially.
Like Bristol City. Hate Traffic congestion - I choose to do business anywhere except Bristol. Cultural mix - gone to far. 'anarchists, cyclists, kebele, left wingers, greens, stokes croft, street artists, vegetarians/vegans' I'd shoot this lot. Yours Victor.
"anarchists, cyclists, kebele, left wingers, greens, stokes croft, street artists, vegetarians/vegans' I'd shoot this lot" So you'd prefer a nice homogenous Bristol where everyone is the same and has the same beliefs and values as you? I'm with Cliftonville on this. Bristol is rightly famous for being a bit different and alternative. Let's remember that many of the things we take for granted today were weird and alternative 30 years ago. I can remember recycling about 25 years ago and my neighbours thought I was some kind of freak - now everyone does it. There's nothing wrong with an alternative lifestyle, as long as it's not funded by the state. The likes of Southville and Montpelier are stuffed full of people working hard but having what most of us would consider to be an 'alternative lifestyle'. It gives Bristol some flavour. And to be honest, I'd rather hang out with some 'cyclists, left wingers, greens and veggies' than the usual bland 'X-factor, Bacardi Breezer, Daily Express-reading suburban semi-detached shoebox dwellers' that seem to populate most other cities.
1) Bristol City 2) I was born there and love the place dislikes 1) It's too far from Blackpool 2) Houses too bloody expensive

'the usual bland 'X-factor, Bacardi Breezer, Daily Express-reading suburban semi-detached shoebox dwellers' that seem to populate most other cities' I'd shoot this lot as well. I've lived and worked in Leicester and London. I won't say you're wrong though. Please don't tell me I'm wrong either. Time will be the judge - not you or me. As for our left wing luvvies who signed up to allow free movement in the EU - I'd swing for that lot as well. What did Blair say at the time - 'we expect between 3k and 13k will arrive in the first year'. Half a million a year have come in every year since and clowns wonder why we need more houses. Not worry Baldee, wait till we receive our next lot of 'friends' from Romania and Bulgaria. You and Blair will be even happier. Hang on, you'll be telling me I'm racist next. Your sort always do.
You are not racist, but Blair isn't left wing either. Shared views similar to Thatcher espousing the free market economics of ultra right wing Milton Friedman.
