I am sick to death of negative football. So many teams go away from home and "Park the bus", seeing one point as better than none and doing nothing to actually win the game. I feel it would be better all round if this type of football was no longer rewarded with any points. Every team should be going out to win the game, not just breaking it up and frustrating better teams. Authorities have introduced measures like not being able to pass back to the goalkeeper to make football more interesting, I feel my idea would give the sport the kick up the backside it needs, and then some.
the americans have or had pen shoot outs to get rid of draws. 3points for a win... 2 for a pen win.. 0 for losing pens zero for loss obviously. then give a bonus point for 4 or more goals.
Think it would have to be no points for a no score draw: bit unfair if a team goes one down early on, hammers away for 80 minutes (hitting post 3 times lol) get the equalizer in the last minute only to be rewarded with zero points. But yeah bonus points for 3-4+ goals scored. Maybe a point for losing team that stays within 1 goal difference. Might as well do this as at the rate they are outlawing tackling there'll be little point for rewarding good defending.
Pen shoots out is a horrible idea. This is not a one shop commercial soap. They have to have a 'winner'. Sickening country at times. Point for draw is fine by me. An extra point for scoring more than 3 would be interesting though. Bit like rugby.
I think we are only looking at it because we are a big team and often we watch "smaller" clubs come to Anfield and play for a draw. If we were on the other side then we wouldn't be thinking like this. In my opinion teams are more than welcome to come and play for the draw and it should be up to us to learn different ways to break them down. We shouldn't expect teams to just roll over and give us 3 points. We have to learn to be ruthless and put the fear into teams coming to Anfield in the way they used. That way half the job is done even before the game starts.
You can have an entertaining 0-0 and a **** 1-1. We aren't American. If teams want to sit back and defend and the other team can't break them down then that's their problem.
Teams that park the bus against us would do the same against any other of the teams that they consider technically superior. Your ability to break them down determines your position at the top as much as any other aspect of the game. Solid defending has always been a legitimate part of football and, frustrating though it can be to watch at times, I don't see an alternative that be considered fair. The possibility of losing or winning a game entirely against the run of play is one of the things that makes football different from most team sports, and why it's more exciting than most. Tbh, a draw always feels like two points dropped to me anyway.
I can see the argument for it, but then you'd lose a lot of the excitement that comes when a team is defending a one goal lead. At the moment, the chasing team knows all they have to do is score to get a point so they really go for it. But if a draw is no better than a loss, then going one goal behind is effectively like going two goals behind. So when you get to the last ten minutes or so the winning team will be defending all three points, whilst the losing team will have no real chance of getting anything. I think that would create big imbalance in motivation, so the last few minutes, when a lot of great action often happens in tight games, would often be very boring.
Don't agree....it's unfair to punish teams for earning a draw. Not all draws come about because a team plays defensively and even if they do so what....defence is a part of the game. I don't mean this rudely by the way...I do understand frustration but teams need to use any tactics they can apart from cheating. I would give teams extra points for goals though....maybe an extra point after every 10 goals.
I have always said that the best way to decide the league and encourage attacking football is for league position to be based on goal difference. Look at the table and it nearly always runs in order for the very top and bottom of the league anyway.
This thread is like reading the minutes from a FIFA meeting More intelligent obviously but still nuts No problems with any team wanting to park the proverbial omnibus just part of the game. Some of the best teams I've ever seen could do it when necessary and they also knew instinctively how to break down opposition defences that did it to them. The AC team with Baresi and co at the back and Riyjkard just in front of them were a classic example. They just happened to be awesome going forward too The George Graham era Gooners as well. In a way I think we appreciate the superb attacking teams more because you realise how tough a challenge it can be up against a park the bus team. Plus I think it's the modern, non contact type rules that have lead to a lot of teams having more men drop deep simply because defending's much harder these days and proper tackling is disappearing from the game.
well it's an interesting debate, if guys are happy to see the likes of what we see in europe (to get a result to go through) week in and week out as bread and butter entertainment fine. If guys want to insult americans again fine... I would hope people just realise that over there they DEMAND more for their entertainment dollar.. I'm not saying i agree or disagree but just look at the exmaple offered by hammond on top gear on the nascar thing... they get 500 laps flat out with full contact allowed compared to 2 hours of cars in procession in F1.. its no wonder f1 was run out of town... they demand a result, socres and entertainment for thier cash. I have to say this, noble is right about our league... and other leagues... if you look at how many teams are only interested in 41 points and saftey each year, if you look at how few people attend sunderland at the weekend, or the brum match i nthe 3rd round... my god.. Don't they want to win things? I find it all a bit negative and small minded myself. I like teams to have a go.. like it or hate it a pen shoot out does give a side one goal down or playing for a draw a chance at some points but equally i see sides just developing shoot out teams not attacking teams so for that reason i thought having rewoards for goals and less points for a pen shoto out winner better than just having nothing for a draw. we must admit rugby with the bonus points for both winning with 4 tries and losing by less than 7 does give sides an incentive to play to the final whistle... it does work! bus parkers end up lower half, and i nthe end like wigan they will evenually go down, the probelm is there's another ten to replace them... but sometimes you get a blackpool, a norwich or the like who come up and know they can't defend and just give it a go and suprise us all (and delight) I wish there were less warnocks and more holloways
See, I understand all this, but its the quality of the changes to the rules that bother me. You use Nascar as an example - fine, but I'd rather watch cars not circling for 500 laps while I get DVT, stuffing down my nth chillidog and nth litre of full-lard coke. If you want to look at the problems with F1, look at the rules that have been applied, not to mention the technical 'innovations' that have been banned year on year. Turbos, Active Suspension, Anti-lock brakes etc. The same goes for Football - but do we really want a return to 'WM' formations and big scorelines, concrete boots and sodden leather balls, just because they used to score more goals back in the days before 'off-side' was invented? Or perhaps we just increase the rewards for bigger wins (score 3 goals - +1 point, and +1 at 6 goals too) and encourage going for the jugular. If a small club comes to a bigger club's ground, they used to be able to kick the strikers off the park. Now they have to be a bit cuter about it. That is an art in itself. There is such a thing as too much change.
well, you are right, the quality of the back pass rule was in its simplicity and impact. I think rugby (union) is the best example of a sport where both they have had really positive impacts with simple rules and bad impacts with stupid rule changes for the sake of it. Exmaples. 1. the european cup with bonus points WORKS 2. the changes they keep making to scrums and the break down areas don't. example the fact that if you take a ball into contact and don't have 3 guys near you to immediately "form a fake ruck" you give a pen away... thats HARSH. on the other hand if you wrap a guy with two tacklers and lay on it slowing the game you get a scrum WRONG.... i think if you get too technical as you say st jonh you can create unintended consequences. I do thik noble is right in what he's said originally. whoever its done making a step change in encouraging more attacking play will be a good thing. How its done is hard to say.... I nthe end though a relegation 6 pointer where you get 4 points for a 4 goal haul, the opposition get a point for 4 goals also... in the end if we forget the 3-4 occasions a big club comes to town and look at how a small club might set up for the bread and butter games i nthe lower half.... well it could be interesting.... And yes i could see MOTD become highlights of pen shoot outs not football, the thing is i've heard may suggestions like count backs on shots taken or corners got and they all do the same thing, just push one aspect more than another. at least pens after 90mins gives a result to one side. 0-0 is a good result i nthat though but if you only get one point after a en hsoot out... while your opponents for relegation get 4then playing for a 0-0 dones't seem too smart. Any creative solutions please tell us!
Numberwang Home Edition. Numberwang but on a board! Who wouldn`t want two 400-sided sided dice? PS so whats wrong with using goal difference, gives credit to teams who score more whilst still rewarding good defending.
