Sammy Ameobi scored twice in front of the watching Alan Pardew as Newcastle Reserves beat their Middlesbrough counterparts 8-2 at United's Benton-based training ground.

Phil Airey also helped himself to a brace, with Nile Ranger, Jeff Henderson, a French trialist and an own goal completing the rout in the practice match on Monday afternoon.

Boro fielded a young team, although goalkeeper Connor Ripley and midfielder Adam Reach both played for their first-team in the Championship last term while striker Curtis Main played more than 50 first-team games for Darlington before signing for the Teessiders this summer.

United, meanwhile, were captained by James Perch - who was solid and composed as he played the full 90 minutes - while Ranger and Ameobi both have some Barclays Premier League experience.

On this evidence, Ameobi is sure to gain plenty more and it took him just five minutes to open the scoring, cutting in from the right before firing the ball home off the gloves of Ripley.

A minute later, it was 2-0 as the livewire Yven Moyo raced down the left and his low cross was diverted in off a red shirt.

Ameobi then curled an effort just over the bar before Brad Inman won possession inside the Boro half and ran though, only to be denied by Ripley, who made a fine save from Ameobi moments later as he tipped a powerful shot around the post.

Not to be outdone, Newcastle keeper Ole Soderberg made an equally spectacular stop to deny Main from point-blank range after Bruno Pilatos' right-wing delivery.

But Ameobi grabbed his second and United's third in spectacular fashion as he burst down the left onto Moyo's hook down the line, turned Adam Jackson inside and out and finished emphatically.

The fourth came from another Moyo assist, as his corner was flicked on by Perch and Jeff Henderson tapped home from a yard out. And it was 5-0 at half-time after Ameobi slipped the ball through to Ranger, who always looked confident of scoring and duly did
    so.

Ranger and Ameobi were replaced at the interval along with Mehdi Abeid, who was again full of running and guile in midfield, and in their place came Michael Riley, James Tavernier and the French trialist, who played up-front alongside Airey who had spent the first-half at right-back.

Main was denied by Soderberg at the beginning of the second half but following a goalmouth scramble at the other end Airey made it 6-0.

Boro pulled one back when Moyo was adjudged to have fouled Main just inside the penalty area, and the former Darlington youngster sent Soderberg the wrong way from the spot, but Newcastle added another goal to their tally almost instantly as Airey drove home from Inman's pull-back.

With his work for the afternoon done, Airey was replaced by Dan Taylor who should have scored with his first touch, sidefooting straight at Ripley when Inman's corner found him unmarked, then the Whitley Bay teenager headed wide from Tavernier's right-wing delivery.

Curtis Edwards restored some pride for Boro with a superb strike from the edge of the box, and it took a great save from substitute goalkeeper Alex Baird to deny Main a second goal.

But with just two minutes left, the scoring was completed as Tavernier wriggled forwards with a superb run and then played the ball perfectly into the path of the French trialist who made no mistake with his finish.

Newcastle United Reserves: Ole Soderberg (sub Alex Baird 65), Phil Airey (sub Dan Taylor 65), Patrick Nzuzi (sub Alex Nicholson 65), James Perch, Jeff Henderson, Yven Moyo, Brad Inman, Mehdi Abeid (sub James Tavernier 46), Greg McDermott, Sammy Ameobi (sub Michael Riley 46), Nile Ranger (sub French Trialist 46).

Sammy is going to be a cult hero, regardless of how well he does. He just has that like-ability factor.

I'm sure Tash will hate him, though.

Looks good with Sameobi, Moyo, Inman, Airey, Soder and Abeid all playing well, we could be seeing them all making a few appearances this season.
