We've tried foreign managers, we've tried English, now we've got an insider. May as well give that a go!
There was mutterings of a severance clause being put in after the World Cup in 2 years that if the FA weren't satisfied with his/team performance then they could part ways. No idea if has been included or not though.
Anothr yes man. Says the right thing. Totally PC and diplomatic. Just what the FA want. F*ck the footballing know how and tactical nous as long as he says the right things. Like the wally he's took the job to soon in his career. PS. I like him as a bloke (in a non gay way) but not the manager for me.
Like I said above though Gil, we've tried everything else. So why not an insider? The job's a poisoned chalice. You have to be a ****ing idiot to even consider wanting the job. Let's try the insider track. He knows the managerial and executive set-up, the off-pitch distractions, the public pressures, the communication pitfalls, the under 21 kids coming through and the first team squad already in place, many but not all of whom played through the Under 21 set up. Give the lad a go. Can't be any worse can it.
I would always want an Englishman to have the job and he probably is the best candidate out there at the moment its just I hate the FA so probably wanted a "maverick" type manager which will probably never ever happen with them tossers in charge.
The last chance we probably had of having a maverick in place was Redknapp, just before Hodgson got the nod. That ship has sailed now Gil. It's corporatists all the way from now on.
Good thing for horse head is that Rooney looks like he's getting back to his best, that media **** storm over him being drunk seems to have woke him up. His experience will be vital for Southgate, you can't buy that, the experience of a natural born winner. Only Cahill has it in that team other than Rooney.
Select who the tabloids demand. Get through qualifying against several teams of Alpine cheesemakers. Have a little wobble when you have to play someone good, just to keep things interesting. Disappoint everyone during a tournament; get slated by the tabloids. Repeat. Better we pay Gareth Southgate to do that than we pay a big name foreign manager 117 gazillion quid to do the same thing.
Doesn't matter if English, foreign, insider etc etc the players are uninspiring money grabbers living in a make believe world. Every couple of years they bottle it at tournaments whether it be just by playing crap, tactics whatever. I just want a bit of pride back in my national team and I cant see it happening anytime soon. Good luck to the bloke though.
