It's not just about the players being happy, it's about the character and resolve that allowed us to come from four goals down against one of the best sides in the league after a week of turmoil. Sunderland didn't have it and that's why they got thrashed when they visited, their players were happy enough, but they had no steel. Our squad has been pulled apart over the last three years, but there's always been someone to pick up the pieces. Hughton's gone, Nolan's gone, Smith's gone, Barton's gone, Carroll's gone. We're running out of people to pull our backsides out of the fire.

I see your point. But I also think that directly relates to how the players are with eachother. A bunch of guys who form a clique (ho ho ho) are likely to want to win for eachother and show character in the face of defeat. Besides that it was never going to be a long term reliance on the likes of Nolan or Smith was it? Barton, (though yes it looks likely) hasn't gone yet and Carroll wasn't even around for the character fueled 4-4 comeback, pedantic maybe but he always seemed more interested in furthering himself than the team anyway.
I'm usually reasonably pessimistic but I'm personally not getting that feeling for the coming season right now. I want to see a new striker though.

Another factor the so called experts (pundits) and doom sayers seem to have missed out, is that most teams around us havent improved either, teams like Stoke, Everton, Fulham,Wolves are pretty much the same as last year...Only top 5 have made big in roads in the transfer market

Some teams have even got arguably worse

Aston Villa- Lost downing and Young to main players only gained Nzogbia
Bolton- Lost sturiddge (pivotal for them last season) and 2 key players due to injury
Wigan- lost Nzogbia havent bought anyone else

The only team that have slightly improved are West Brom and Sunderland that in and around us, add to that the teams that are promoted and although things have been down the last month, things could be way worse...

So it all depends on how the new signings gel and adapt to premier league if they do then we should be aim for top half as a goal and be happy with anything between 15-10th if that doesnt happen

I just don't buy the theory that our team spirit can only be attributed to the English players in the squad, and the scouse ones in particular. Our current captain is a veteran of international and European football with a level of professionalism that the younger players can look up to, in my opinion certainly more than one Joey Barton. English grit and bite, compare Tiote to Guthrie and tell me who's more suited to the English game, derby or otherwise.

They did the EXACT same thing last season. Every ****er had us going down because 'we had the same team;. We've now changed totally from 'that team'....so we are definetly going donw because 'we have changed'.................

..........Media can go **** themselves. You really would think Newcastle is an island off the coast of the UK that nobody has a rats ass of respect for except for the people that live their.

    ****. Off.

I agree with literally everything AG has said here. I've been thinking (and saying) it for awhile. We're at least a leader short of a safe season. If Barton goes then I'd take safety. If he doesn't I'd be happy with safety but be disappointed with 17th or 16th.

I watched Sunday Supplement yesterday, they had Woolnough(sp?), the guys from the Telegraph, Mirror & the Sun. They did their predictions for the upcoming season & none of them mentioned us in the relegation. Think there are a lot worse teams thanus in the league this season.

what really gets me is that they just aren't looking at the big picture. look at the teams that have just gained promotion. there might be one that surprises everyone and does okay but chances are that 2 of them will go back down. then you have the likes of wigan who have been on a massive slide and have just sold there star player...blackburn who are almost certainly going to be in deep **** this year as there owners know less about football than ours and they have a no mark manager and an average at best squad. villa would be totally ****ed if bent were to get injured as they've sold the rest of their star men although zog is likely to do well there.

its just biased piss poor journalism. i think we'll finish about 12-15 depending on how quickly they gel together and if we can stay reletively injury free

I find this intriguing - short of taking Ashley hostage and threatening to cut off his supply of greasy food, he is more than likely to suit his fat self when it comes to signing players.

It is what it is, so we may as well look at things positively and get behind the team.

You say people are burrying they're heads - so what is your alternative to "burrying" our heads (being positive)? Adopting your negative attitude which aspires to being relegated?
