David Moyes has one eye on the future at Sunderland, with the side’s younger players showing signs of real promise. Moyes has been encouraged by the recent wins over Bournemouth and Hull City, which has seen the Black Cats drag themselves to within three points of safety. And with several younger players in the matchday squad, Moyes says the future is looking bright. Against Hull City, Jordan Pickford (22), Jason Denayer (21), Duncan Watmore (22) Didier Ndong (22) and Paddy McNair (21) – who looks set to miss the rest of the season after rupturing his cruciate ligament – all started while Javier Manquillo (22), Adnan Januzaj (21), Donald Love (21) and Lynden Gooch (20) started on the bench. And Moyes says sometimes you don’t recognise a new team being built “until it is actually there”. Moyes said: “We have Jordan Pickford who is 22, Paddy McNair and Donald Love both 21, Didier Ndong, 22, and even Adnan and Jason Denayer are young. “They are not all our players but we have quite a young team and I have just started to see a few seeds of things coming through. “I hope that it continues to grow because Jordan has already done that, he has come right through. “There are little bits elsewhere too, Duncan is looking more like it and he scored the other week (for England Under-21s) – signs there could be four or five just beginning. “Sometimes you never recognise the new team getting built until it is actually there. “Javier Manquillo too is only young, he was away with Spain Under-21s during the international break. “The boys we have brought in have nearly almost all been young players and I think there is an element of going towards building a new younger team.” I firmly believe we have bright future in out ranks, mean nowt unless the present is sorted though imo.
Reading that, our recruitment efforts don't appear to be as bad as some think. Scouting staff have done a fair job in assembling reasonably talented lads so development is the key along with some experienced signings means we ain't in such a bad way.
