Just read this in the Daily Mirror's match report from yesterday's game

"There was no Barton *yesterday and it took just a couple of minutes for his *absence to be felt.

A home free-kick just *outside the box was in perfect Barton territory but new *signing Yohan Cabaye shot tamely at former Celtic keeper Artur Boruc."

Sorry but how many free kicks in shooting range did Joey actually score last season? None that I can think of, I suppose if we'd of conceded it would of been because Joey wasn't there to clear off the line!

Joey's scored one from a free kick for us, and that was in the Championship.

    Amateur (at best) reporting. <doh>

Same old, same old. You can't expect any other kind of story from their ace reporters.

Sadly it isn't really. It just makes me more angry at them because it's clear that they just hate everyone from the NE :(

did we actually score a free kick last season (in the prem)? (I'm not counting the one that hit Jonas on the back

Since when did Barton become a free-kick master? Sure, at delivering a pin point cross but, from watching the players warm up before the games, he's not on the same level as Fergie, let alone Raylor when it comes to hitting the net

No, because Barton took them all (ironically) and his free kicks are only good for floating crosses, not scoring.

Yeah we never scored one directly, just Raylor's in the cup. Barton's never went for goal, as Smudger said, just normally floated over aiming for Carroll (before Jan, of course..)

Or, as we could never forget, Barton's free kick which was deflected back out the box and then struck by lightning...

To be fair most of Barton's free kicks hit the target.

So did Cabaye's last night. Just Barton never scored direct from a free kick, and they make it sound like we've dropped Beckham from set piece duty.

if anything that makes it worse. (puts tinfoil hat on) they just seem to love to badmouth the NE teams

edit: it's already been said (i posted before reading further down) but if anything it makes it more poignant.

The best thing we can do for all concerned is to stick five past arsenal without conceding. That will have the southern media falling over themselves and jumping off tall buildings in total shock...

Then it would be the same old story, Arsenal were stupidly poor and Newcastle will still go down after all 5 goals were lucky and the ref was on our side...I think I've just done the report for them...

Couldn't quite believe the amount of Sunday newspapers / experts predicting Newcastle for relegation this season.

Couldn't quite believe the amount of Sunday newspapers predicting a top 10 finish for Wolves as well! A lot of pressure on sole summer signing Roger Johnson then...

It makes me laugh that the same journo's who were taking the piss out of Barton a few months ago when he said that he should be in the England squad are talking about him as if he is the greatest player in the world.

This is exactly the kind of reporting that caused me to stop buying the national papers. Absolute garbage. As much as I want him to be back in the team asap, Barton does not provide the quality on free kicks or corners. We've been crying out for a deal ball taker for years since losing Nobby and Robert. We've had to endure Barton and Guthrie doing the best they can but we lack quality in this area. By all accounts Cabaye is decent on dead balls and I think I'd prefer to judge him when he is not playing in such treachorous conditions for a start! Clowns.

Ben Arfa's Left Foot - Beckham overrated on dead balls?? I mean he didn't score as many as he should, but his quality on dead balls made the national team look way better than they were for years. Crossing wise, there is no one better in world football with a dead ball for me.
