Just been reading through some articles on SAFC.com.

What is everyones opinion on John Mensah. I know he is probably the best center half to have played in the red&white, and his injuries are hampering him becoming a legend at the SoL. But reading some of the articles, mainly on the new signings - has Mensah been instrumental in the obvious progression of our club? Without Mensah here, would we have gotten Asamoah? And reading Sess's article about joining SAFC, he says Gyan being here was a big part in him coming here. No doubt Muntari would have been the same?

Do you reckon we sign him up on a pay-as-you play deal? Or reduced wages based on playing 10-15 games a season? Seems to me that having someone like John in the team is only going to help us move onwards and upwards...

Definately worth keeping if a deal can be struck.
When he's fit he's almost unbeatable.

John Mensah is a name known throughout world football. On his day, when fit he makes things look easy and his reading of the game is second to none. Having a player of his stature at the club can only be a good thing, and as you've pointed out I'm sure he has influenced certain players in their decision to join us. (and maybe future signings???)

Personally, I think a pay as you play contract would suit both parties and I get the impression that Mensah would be happy with that setup.

Would love to keep him for all the above positive reasons.

Does anybody know when his contract at Lyon expires?

I've heard that he needs an op on whatever the main injury he has (his knee?), and that that op will put him out for about a year. BUT when he comes back from it, he shouldn't have any further problems with that, and his injuries will go away. Then he will be a regular starter providing he can regain his form... which a player of his class probably will. If this is the .ase, would it be worth signing him up and have him go through the op, so when he comes back he will be our player, and injury free...? Or does it sound all a bit risky?

Im a huge fan of Mensah's, and am praying to Buddha everynight that his injuries will go away so he can team up with Titus to provide a solid brick wall for Gordon to render.

    I say yes.

The lads obviously a massive influence on an immensly talented group of Ghanaian players, a lot of whom have strong leadership qualities themselves, people like Essien, Muntari etc.

We need to say to Lyon, '2million euro, bearing in mind he will be out for a year, by which time he would have been a bosman'

If we can get him 'cured' he is quite simply a phenomenal and world class defender, no 2 ways about it.

I know that when Mensah's in the team, i ALWAYS think we're gonna win, he's that good.

Gotta sign him up for me. Im sure Brucey and Quinn will sort it out, whether hes on a pay-as-you-play or a deal similar to Ledley King at Spurs remains to be seen.

What I do know, however, they will make the best decision for SAFC.

Sign him up on a pay as you play deal. I always feel confident we will keep a clean sheet when he plays.

I've read a fair bit about him but even before that I recognised he was special

I reckon we should try to keep him and I believe he would make a much better captain tnan Catts. In fact he would be a great club captain as he is very mature and well respected

Great player and great for the Club's exposure on the world stage. Sign him up and explore the possibility of using him in the future as an ambassador opening doors to talented African players.

I dont think theres any REAL Sunderland fan who doesnt want to have John Mensah at our club. The guy is such a genuine bloke and loved by his team mates and looks like he has been instrumental in some of our latest signings.

Get him on board as many people say for pay as you play or reduced wages and bonus's for playing a certain amount of games

We're pretty much unanimous then <ok>

Suprised we never moved for Anthony Annan, a quality holding midfielder, another Ghanaian, who had mentioned he'd lik to play in England, he's signed for Schalke today for 2million euro, a pittance.

A great idea. The standard of African football has shot up over recent years and can only get better. He has been a sort of unofficial ambassador along with Gyan in the recruitment of Sess and Munta anyway.
