No one could play an outwardly smooth character with a malevolent inner core like he could. The ability to do that and play lighter roles showed a versatility that a lot of actors don't possess.

I'm not usually one for BBC series - but I really loved them in the mid-2000s when they made Spooks and Hustle - I thought Vaughn in Hustle was fantastic. There's not many Americans can just slip into a British series so seamlessly like that.

My sister and I just buried my father in Montreal. With only immediate family and a few lifelong friends present, he was lowered into the ground in an unadorned pine box, next to his mother and father. Exactly as he’d asked. As I write this I’m thinking of my father’s unique blend of self-deprecation and dignity, his approachable elegance, his charisma without audacity, his old-world gentlemanliness and the hand-forged tower of his work. There’s so much I wish I could thank him for, just one last time. I’d thank him for the comfort he always provided, for the wisdom he dispensed, for the marathon conversations, for his dazzling wit and humor. I’d thank him for giving me, and teaching me to love Montreal and Greece. And I’d thank him for music; first for his music which seduced me as a boy, then for his encouragement of my own music, and finally for the privilege of being able to make music with him. Thank you for your kind messages, for the outpouring of sympathy and for your love of my father.

Navajo Code Talker George James Sr. dies at age 92

A World War II Navajo Code Talker died Wednesday morning at the age of 92.

George James Sr. was born and raised in Red Valley on the Navajo Nation. At the age of 17, he volunteered to serve in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and was selected to become a Navajo Code Talker.

He reached the rank of corporal in the 5th Marine Division.

James fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II and later returned to Iwo Jima for the 60th anniversary of the raising of the flag on Mount Suribachi.

James was one of hundreds of tribal members who used a World War II code based on their native language to stump the Japanese.

One of those names I grew up with, Jack Bodell, Brian London, Billy Walker, Henry Cooper, Joe Erskine.

Can't remember which fight it was but a rather over excited Harry Carpenter exclaimed "He's toying with him! He's toying with the man who beat Jack Bodell!".
