Hoops legend Marsh slams 'idiot' QPR owners for failing to splash the cash

QPR legend Rodney Marsh has accused owners Flavio Briatore and Bernie Ecclestone of treating fans 'like mushrooms' - and said he would have respected manager Neil Warnock if he had quit.
Marsh, who scored at Wembley when Rangers won the only major trophy in their history, is fuming at the way the two Formula One tycoons have failed to back the club's bid to stay in the Premier League after winning promotion last season.

So far, QPR's only cash signing has been £1.2million Blackpool striker DJ Campbell, with Southampton winger Jason Puncheon expected to join this week in a £2m deal.
Marsh said: 'It's nowhere near enough. I said Blackpool would go down last season because they hadn't spent enough.
'Without at least £10m being spent, you've got virtually no chance. I don't know why they didn't get someone like Scott Parker in with proven Premier League experience.
'Briatore and Ecclestone have treated the fans like mushrooms. Somewhere a village is missing two idiots. :emoticon-0102-bigsm

'I thought four weeks ago that Neil Warnock would have walked out. I'm not saying he should have but I'd have respected him for it. Because what will happen is he'll go on a streak of games without winning and people will call for his head anyway.

'Neil's had his hands tied in the transfer market. He did wonders last season, winning promotion was like swimming the Channel with diver's boots on. And he kept Adel Taarabt under control, which is no mean feat.
'But instead of backing Neil, the club have treated him like a naughty schoolboy who has to stand in the corner in silence.'
Marsh's outspoken comments about keeping supporters in the dark - like mushrooms - are certain to have a huge impact. He is still revered for the goal that helped win the 1967 League Cup final against West Bromwich.

And he warned: 'It is going to be very difficult for QPR to stay up - the first 10 games are absolutely critical.'

Will the people with their heads in the sand and their football brains up their a*se finally realize that we are in a dire predicament going into the season.
I mean there's so many lunatics on here that think we are Barcelona and are going to waltz into the Premier League and find it a doddle, it beggars belief.

Needless to say I think Rodders has hit the nail on the head

£1.25 million won't keep us in the PL, ten times that amount would be borderline so Rodney's comments are spot on, unless we bring in two full backs and a centre back that are PL quality we are likely to be playing catch-up this season. We probably need another midfielder and striker to at least have a squad that will be competitive, at present we are struggling for quality.

Look at the West Ham squad last season and they went down without a whimper, we may have better team-spirit than them but without quality we'll be done for.

Good to have a dose of reality from RM - still, we're in a better position than we were in three weeks ago. If we can get rid of the poisonous Goons, it's just possible that Fernandes (if he buys) and Mittal form an Asian partnership, and more funds in the Jan transfer window

Apparently I'm banned from #QPR. Not a bad price to pay for using my 1st amendment rights! Suffered the same fate at Sky Sports! #Understood

I think RM is naive in assimilating his latest outburst with his fall from grace from Sky Sports.

The 'tsunami' / 'toon army' gag that he fluffed on Sky Sports was at best poor, ill-advised, and too sensitive for a global broadcaster to accept at the time. No excuses there RM old fellow. Leave those kind of gags to Frankie Boyle.

Although he makes some good points in his assessment of QPR's prospects, and is entitled to his opinion, you have to question his judgement. I read the TalkSport 10 Year book about 18 months ago and there's a whole section devoted to his outbursts.

"Drivetime star Rodney Marsh was given to mood swings. So much so that production staff decided he had three personalities - apathetic Bubba, depressive Rodney and enthusiastic Earl. One Monday, asked on-air by co-host Paul Breen-Turner how he had spent the weekend, the 'Rodney' character emerged and Marsh replied: "Well, I was down on the coast this weekend and I thought about suicide again. Ultimately I would have to say I am very depressed right now Paul and if there are any psychiatrists listening could they call and give me some advice?" On another occasion, asked about last night's football by Adrian Durham, he said: "I didn't see the game as I was out on the lash and, do you know what Ade, I am actually feeling quite depressed."

There's a risk that if everyone talks the club down, it will become self-fulfilling.

    first input in this forum
    long standing Qpr supporter
I once heard RM on TV saying that the club will disintegrate and go out of the football league.
    Well thankfully he was wrong
I still wish the club well despite the problems with ownership, can't wait for Saturday

Marsh I am sad to say is a bit of a Knob Jockey, forget 44 years ago. He still thinks he is the clown prince. Most of what he spouts is drivel, bit of dementia creeping in I reckon
