This was Henderson in injury time - I don't buy the thought that there were no options to pass forward. He just received the ball from Clyne and he could have played it centrally or to Can.
It was disgusting yes. There was a very easy pass to can on. Dreadful. Imo every player must have a forward pass first in their mind and he clearly doesnt.
I could have sworn I heard Klopp talk about that when he came in. Ah well, I think this match showed Klopp hasn't quite removed the brittle mentality from the team. We were frightened of losing this one. The hype got to the players. While this fixture has extra meaning to fans it shouldn't to players who truly believe they are going for the title...they should be simply seeing a sub standard United team there to be dismantled. It also shows that our strength in depth is still lacking somewhat. Take 2 regulars out of the starting 11 and we revert to predictable.
Maybe if Can didn't have the turning circle and acceleration of an aircraft carrier he might have passed to him.
Tbh at this time Henderson actually thinks he's Messi and Gerrard all rolled into one, him getting the captains armband for club and country(in Rooney's absence) have had an adverse effect on how he sees himself, he's limited in his ability and should just stick to his strengths like tackling and playing short one-two's with the occasional shot at goal if he's clean through or up for a corner. I like the lads strong mentality but you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear he isn't a thinker and makes some rash judgements instantly instead of giving himself a couple of seconds to weigh up his options, still he's where he is in Klopp's and Southgate's views on him as a player so let's hope he improves as the season progresses.
That one pass to Can would surely have won us the game.. Can, by then was running on fumes, he most likely dwells on the ball too long and we lose possession.. Also, if Can does get the ball, who does he move it on to? The rest look pretty well marked.. Sometimes you don't look ahead one pass, you need to look ahead 2 or 3, and if there was no other movement other than Can then why force it when the likelihood is possession will be lost?
Disgusting and Dreadful? Because of one pass? You want to get a grip mate. He played well. Better a safe pass than playing into trouble. People on this thread say he thinks he's Messi then complain when he's not beating 5 players and doing 20 defence splitting passes. You should all take a long look at yourselves.
Square ball could easily get cut out by Pogba, would be dangerous. Pass to Can looks on there but don't know if roll on for 1/2 second longer if Young cuts that pass out as well. Easy from a photo, harder in real life.
I think the point is that he had options ahead of him and he didn't choose them. This isn't an isolated incident - it's consistent throughout his career, which is a shame because he can pick a pass. I just think he's a bottler in these types of incidents - take the pressure of him and he's a different player. But any form of pressure on him and he doesn't know what to do. I'm all for playing it safe in certain situations but we need risk takers and players who WANT and CAN play the riskier balls. As a number 6, he's not expected to create but I do expect him to start attacks.
ok ok... it was just really annoying cos the game was petering out for 10mins by then. I take the point, it was a bit silly.
Looking at that picture again.. Clyne is not deep enough, he should be level with their back four, take Shaw with him. Mane is hiding behind one of their players and isn't offering, if it went to him, he's offside. Lallana should be further left, close to the Ref, this would let Coutinho shift deeper too, which would take Herrera more towards him and give Can a bit more room, then the Pass to Can is on.. Also, where the hell is Origi.. why is he there and not engaging one of the CBs.. Still stand by my earlier comments, given the movement (lack of) and time of the game, its best to get out with a draw then force a pass, lose possession and possibly get punished on the counter.
ontext is clyne back passed to him first so he was already retreating and the rest of them had all closed in as clynes options. . they i think expected clyne to back pass and switched off.
You also have to look at Hendo's viewpoint, and the fact that he has to make a split-second decision based on what he can see. From ground level all he can see is Can in a circle of blue. The square pass is very dodgy - unless hit at real pace Pogba's all over it. A pass to Can is probably going to result in Can himself passing it back again. Can is less for turning than Maggie Thatcher was and can only really play in the direction he's pointing. He could possibly play a triangle with Lala but like I say, to weigh all of this up in a second is asking a bit much. It's ok to give a judgement on overall performances, but this dissection of a single incident can be harsh.
Exactly, we have hindsight on our side and every pass looks easy from our seat in the stadium or on the sofa... If we're 1-0 down and in the dying moments we play it back, then yes, we could be critical but we weren't and with his decision we took a loss out of the equation. If, Buts and Maybes, but had we been patient against Chelsea in 13/14 we'd have won the league, who knows, this point maybe valuable come end of the season, it may help us get a top 4 place..
Well, I'd still rather we had three - but it is what it is. Hopefully this gives Klopp further food for thought on the areas where we need to improve. We have to find ways of breaking down inferior opposition that just comes to play for a draw and is content with that.
