It's bit like when we wouldn't be relegated and observers seem peeved at our our continual survival; but this time we wont sink from the best of the rest position. Sorry guys.
Who would have thought that this game would be massively overly hyped due to Klopp and Mourinho and the ensuing media frenzy. In the end a dour game, who would have expected Mourinho to play negative like this...
To be fair the pundits and presenters seemed far more enthusiastic about the Saints v Burnley game than the preceding game with all the hype!
MOTD coverage has improved a lot since the 90's. Back then there would be extended highlights of two games (featuring Utd and whoever that season's rivals were), and short highlights of a third game. Then basically they would just rush through the goals of all the other games as quickly as possible, and offer no analysis whatsoever. And of course there was no MOTD2 back then either.
I loved it last night. There had been much discussion about venue among the arm-chair Scousers on Sunday while I was travelling home and various text messages inviting me to see the humiliation of the Mancs arrived during the evening. Good pub, great beer and then ... total dross. Not even a "fascinating tactical battle", just sheer dross. Reminded me of 0-0 draws we got at Bolton years ago, or that terrible one at SMS for Adkin's first game (Rochdale?). Listened with increasing incredulity to the excuses, before slipping off home to catch up with a proper team's highlights on the telly. Oh, there is a God. Lovely jubbly.
I watched a short part of the first half of last night's game out of curiosity, as people were talking about it on here. I know the first half of Sunday's game was nothing to write home about, but there was excitement and nearly a few goals. Last night seemed to consist of players kicking the ball vertically up in the air and then missing headers as far as I could see. I've watched better U8 games, and I bet there weren't many of those playing last night on less than £100,000 a week. Disgraceful.
know the first half of Sunday's game was nothing to write home about, _____________________________________________________ It was electric! Good build up play, great saves, a edge of the seat injury, it had everything.....but a goal......but you could tell that was coming.
Looking at the papers this morning, hilarious. Putting aside 2½ pages to cover this tremendous game only for it to be, well, boring made it a bit of a struggle. Instead they mainly talked about the 'new Man utd' , a bloke who only played the last 13mins and Jose's stunning tactical prowess (we call it defending). I thought Shaw looked terrified when asked to come on at the end, The Blamer will erode what confidence he has left I think.
1.30pm Manchester City v Southampton (Sky Sports) Referee: Mark Clattenburg Assistants: J Collin, S Bennett Fourth official: K Friend
Have to agree...I've watched highlights three times now and unusually I have watched the first half again. In other similar matches, I have always jumped to the bit where we score, but it was all enjoyable.
Not sure Utd were anymore than of average interest until the 90's. Nowhere near hyped back then. Mind you, I was living in NZ in the early 90's, so am hardly qualified. Out there, we got no more news about ManU than anyone else back then. Certainly, in the 1980's, it would have been Liverpool and one other. Tbh, I think I preferred it when they only covered one match. At least you could get into the depth of it. It's probably why I can easily watch 90 minutes over again even if I've seen it live. Can't stand these 5 minute highlights. And we did have Southern Soccer the next day.
Yep. I wouldn't say that the first half electrified, but both Jonathan Pearce and Steve Claridge, commentating on Radio 5, enjoyed the first half and I certainly did too. I really think Steve is a bit of a fan. He's always saying more and positive stuff about us than the average pundit. Or maybe he's just redressing the balance of the otherwise pundit comment vacuum for Southern football.
It wasn't just the lack of shots, or general quality of any kind, it was all so tame The one thing I like about Claridge is that he seems to be a big supporter of all the south coast clubs and a big advocate for football down in these regions. At least that's the impression I always get when I listen to him. I've always felt that the south coast is a special area for football teams, with not many other options this side of London , so I've always got time for anyone that talks about us in a positive way.
Despite his allegiance to the blue few down the road, he is a bloke I will always have time for. During the football league show when it was on the BBC he would always talk about us in a positive light and has continued that into the premier league.
