Ron's come up with a cracking idea to monitor when we put up a winner worth shouting about. I'm just taking his idea and running with it. From here on in i'll be keeping a track of everyone's selections on the daily thread with a view to logging who has the top three picks each week. By top three picks i mean who tips up the highest price either SP winner or stated taken price winner in a week. If you state it is bet fair exchange or i believe you've taken a betfair price i will not factor in SP price. As i said on Ron's thread, i'm not bothering with anyone who goes for a daft scatter gun approach. I originally said i'd limit it to the first six picks for each person per day but as most cards are 7 races long i'll extend that to 7 choices. If you stick multiple horses up in one race i'll only take into consideration the first named horse. I'll run this until Christmas with the prize for the highest priced winner being a three bottle selection of wines from my wine company, WWW.SQUASHEDGRAPEWINE.COM Whoever wins will get a list from me with some wines i think are worth such an illustrious prize. I want the winner to to have it for Christmas so i'll say the cut off is the 18th December. I only work with tiny independent producers and i'm very (and i do mean very) protective of my wines which means whatever you win will be the best bottle you drink this Christmas. After that i'll keep it going until the final day of the Aintree Festival and the overall winner will take home a 6 bottle case of wine that i'll choose. All you have to do is send me your address and i'll do the rest. Just to be 100% clear before we start - if you put up a horse that wins at 100/1 but it is you're 8th selection that day IT WILL NOT COUNT. If you put up 3 choices in one race and the 2nd horse you mention wins at 100/1 IT DOES NOT COUNT. The only way your horse will count is if it is one of your first 7 selections in 7 different races and if you have multiple selections in one race it is 100% clear it is your first selection in a race. If anyone is unsure what i mean then let me know and i'll clarify. Good luck chaps. Let the battle commence.
Crystal clear. Cheers Bob Just a thought though. Should some logic be provided for the choice? (ie it should be a selection someone genuinely believes to be a good bet, as in racing columns). Also I wouldn't expect a horse to be selected in every race.
Sunday 16th October James T 3.35 Kempton - 4/1 Best Boy Barney Well done James. You kick us off. Well done but i'm 100% sure a 4/1 bet won't cut the mustard in a month or so.
Generally in favour of all things like this however it doesn't sound like a great idea to me. Just encourages people to throw 7 darts at big prices every day rather than looking for value and making a case for a horse whatever the price. I might really fancy a horse at 6/4 and think it should be 1/2 but would instead go for the 33-1 shot if I wanted a chance of winning this comp.
I agree and if you follow how i bet (i.e. irregularly and only for what i think is value) then you'd see it's completely counter intuitive to me but i like the option for people being able to bet how they usually would - i've retained the caveat that if i think people are taking the michael i'll nip it in the bud asap. I almost always bet in single figures but always look for the value play (irrespective of whether the price be odds on or odds against) so i almost certainly wouldn't win this prize but its just a bit of fun.
I think this is the correct way to bet but on this occasion i'm going with the highest price winner. If i think this kills the DT i'll cut it off early and we can have a chat about it as a forum with majority rule either way.
"Are we as good as we think we are?" Bob, I don't think I'm good at all! However, I'll just carry on and put up the one selection now and again, as I normally do. That will have to do. If it does not qualify, then so be it! The idea is certainly worth a try, although I disagree with Ron inasmuch as it might well affect the DT?
I agree with The Don. Hence the suggestion about providing logic. Eg If someone tips up a horse at 2/1 believing it to be over priced and it wins at 4/6, that deserves credit. The strength of argument/confidence in the bet should also be taken into account. I wouldn't want the DT to be affected.. I was thinking more of simply acknowledging the good selections. The idea of giving a prize is great and also provides a marketing opportunity. As such Bob would decide who gets the prize rather than it goes to the highest priced winner. This way it should have no affect on the DT.
forgive me but you'll be encouraging newspaper type tipping - one for every race which kind of goes against the refined selections we tend to get on the daily thread - quality not quantity - otherwise it all gets lost in the hundreds of names that would have to be trawled ........surely you restrict it to a nap and a next best for your purposes and not encourage forty selections or more from each member ?
Surely, this will just be won by one of the ‘compulsives’ who bets and nomintes a horse in every race! Meanwhile, I would have thought the ‘Daily Thread’ would, as a result, simply become chock full of tips, for horses at big prices, that no-one really fancies but are putting up in order to win the competition – dart throwing and all that. As for 7 tips a day I doubt I tip 7 horses a month on here. I think Don and Rudebwoy have summed up my feelings perfectly so won’t repeat their words.
I think that's the general view Barney. The intention was to have no affect on the DT whatsoever; everyone continue as normal As Bob has said, if the DT is adversely affected the idea will be dropped.
I understand that point chaps but it is restricted to 7 selections in a day already. When the forum is flying people do tend to put up a couple at the start of the day and then add a few more throughout the course of the afternoons action. People can put up as many tips as they want but i'll not be looking at them after their seventh. I've done that because it incorporates the 7 races on a particular card or for the days when we have too much racing - one or two choices on each card - and that doesn't seem too much to me. However, if the general theme is you'd like to have a nap and nb per day and limit it to that then that's fine with me as it massively reduces the work i'll need to do. Chaps, let me know what you think and majority will rule.
be a dogs dinner if you don't Bob - your call since you are doing the donkey work - I may have a number of bets a day but certainly don't put them all on here - I think if you don't restrict it to a small selection it becomes like the competition where we have to select seven and points awarded for sp - many , myself included will go for more speculative outsiders on price alone - yes they do win sometimes but few if any of us back them - seems to go against the spirit of the daily thread . just my opinion mind
sometimes the daily thread may only contain a handful of selections - but if two or three win the strike rate is high - your approach encourages mass selection but the strike rate will be much less and therefore less value to people - there are forums where hundreds of horses are put up , but it doesn't make a good forum .....
