Rick put together this list of ten disasterous aways, I was at eight of them and there were some real dogs in there (it's already been pointed out that the 5-1 Colchester game should be on there)...
Bolton and Rotherham away last season were pretty horrendous. Going back about 15 years, I can remember some pretty depressing defeats at places like Lincoln and Mansfield. None of those could compete with yesterday's scoreline but they were certainly sobering to watch.
I went to Blackpool on a Tuesday night in the 90s - got mullered 6-2. I remember these kids, teenagers, before the game high-fiving each other as it was revealed that David Mail was fit again and in starting line up. Very strange. Also, the year before, we lost 5-1 there again on a Tues night - think Bamber scored two in about 90 seconds.
I was at that Blackpool game with my Dad and Grandad. It was the first time I was properly exposed to the true capability of City's ****ness. The 5-0 home thrashing against Wigan was also a pisser, when Emile Heskey and Amr Zaki are running riot, you know it's a bad day.
I've never been to Dean Court before, but I remember us losing there 6-2 and 5-1 in successive seasons (I'm guessing this has already been mentioned). I also recall them trashing us at BP (might have been 0-4 or 1-4) when they were under Redknapp and had the likes of Luther Blissett playing from them. WHU beat us 7-1 in the late 80s/early 90s too. First game of the season, full of optimism, sunny day. 4-0 down at Oxford by about 25 mins.
Getting beat by Huddersfield boxing day 5-0 1980 was my worse away day got a slap on the way back to the coach for my troubles 16 years old first game without the old man had to explain a black eye lol
Doncaster in 1998 I think , bottom of the football league , chucked it down all game and we lost 1-0 ..Players walked off to chants of you're not fit to wear the shirt . Don't see how any premier league game is classed as worse then that
Doncaster in general seems to always throw up some shockers for us. 2010 in particular was grim. 3-1 defeat I think it was.
Donny away at the start of 2003/04 season. The worse pro game of football I've seen. I think it was a Monday night game on TV.
Getting beaten 6-0 at Cardiff in 1969/70 wasn't fun and 5-1 in 1970/71, coming home with the windowsput in on a cold night at the end of October was worse. The bus being parked miles away from the ground, the only one there and having to wade through hordes agitated taffsma barrel of laughs either. The following season the Taffs being even more het up as they had been held to a draw wasn't a barrel of laughs after the game either for the usual solitary coach for trips like that. Needless to say the 1972/3 season we won 2-0 and I didn't go. Plenty of others down the years. But still more fun than the past few years. Probably down to age and the sterile, organised trips nowadays.
Do we mean the cup game when it was freezing and black ice around the ground? If so - yep it was appalling. I spent the next 4 months referencing this game whenever anyone called for Ghilas to be picked, Back to the original list and it's all far too recent. Notable dogs that immediately come to my mind are: Donny when they were the worst team in the country and we had more fans there than them, but they still beat us 1-0. Torkey away being turned over 5-1 when we could only see half of the pitch cos of fog. We only knew the score cos of their fans cheers, was utterly pointless being there. Wendies away murdering us 5-1 in what was my first ever away game. I should've just quit there and then.
Even worse was the only other occasion we have let in 7 goals in my time as a City fan, the 7-2 defeat at Brentford.
Early 1990's loss at Portmouth, 5-0 I think was the worst performance I have ever seen from City. Believe Stan Ternant was sacked pretty much immediately afterwards.
