Seeing as we have time to fill due to the international break another thread dwelling on the past. I do not know whether I was unlucky when I was young but I had more than my fair share of missing goals. In reality it was probably due to me hitch hiking to many matches in my youth through lack of money. Aston Villa away 1967-68 season (i think - cannot be bothered to check). Woke up late with a hangover and missed the coach. Decided to hitch there. Got there at 3.20 which I thought was not bad. However, there was no turnstiles open, + the Aston Villa staff either could not hear my shouts, or just ignored me. Got in with twenty minutes to go when the score was 3-2 after being 2-0 down. Came home on the coach (I had after all paid for my seat) + drowned my sorrows in the big pub at Moorends on the outskirts of Thorne where we always stopped. Good pub with two snooker tables though the locals were never too friendly.
Burnley May 84 the first one. Buses parked up by the fire station, some hungry german shepherds harassing us all the way to Turd Moor, then a group of interlopers from the People's Republic of South Yorkshire appeared just outside the turnstiles. Heard a massive roar just as we were entering the LongSide away section, and the ****ing roof came off. Got up the stairs into darkness and it was ****ing bedlam, but in a good way. One-nil HAL and 87mins left to get two more. Mike Phelan masterclass that night at the heart of the Clarets midfield.
Hillsborough in 2004. Missed the Wendies opening goal and our equaliser. Compared to some, I believe I was rather lucky to get in that point!
SWFC MMIV Missed their first, our first , our second and got in about 35 mins gone. Legendary night. Left the ground with pockets full of coins, but the kid on the turnstile could have trousered thousands of quids and the club would never have known.
Even worse than the Aston Villa game! Hitch hiked to Bristol City again in 1967 (I think). My mate + myself struggled to get a lift (police warning motorists not to pick up hitchers as two had robbed a garage). Had to get a train from Gloucester to get there. Arrived at halftime + it was 3-3. No goals in the second half.
Hull City v Exeter City, 20 April 1966 City won 6-1 and my mate was later arriving and missed 2 goals even though he was only 5 minutes late.
At Leeds a few years ago after getting stuck in traffic I managed to walk out of the concourse to see Diouf mid way through an outrageous dive that won them a penalty, I'd rather have still been stuck in traffic.
The Den August 1980. The driver of the corporation bus that day was well out of his KUH comfort zone and got us well lost on what seemed to be the railway arches near Arthur Daley's lock up. He got us up a narrow lane full of railway bridges like Calvert Lane gone bad, so the decision was taken to leg it to the ground. Ended up in the CBL end. Final score was 1-1 (the inevitable Edwards), att. was 3,831 on a sunny opening day of the season. Made our way to the away end towards the finish via a passage way in the corner like a scoreboard, then through the large side terrace side full of whelk eaters and Courage drinkers. If I remember correctly one of this board's moderators was on the bus that day. Football in the 80s: it was horrible you know.
Missed the first two when we beat David Pleat's Leicester 5-2 circa 1990 and also Burnleys early winner from Nathan Delfonueso when we had Guzan in goal a few years back. Heard the muted cheers as I walked across Hull Royal car park.
Didn't miss any goals but got to boundary park at half time once due to hold ups on m62. But was in time to see Swanny and Andy Payton score second half goals in a 2-0 win.
Good thread and some interesting anecdotes. Sadly, I don't have any to contribute, but just for the matter of fact, the despite not being an early bird I can only recall missing a couple of goals for being late: D Darby v Hartlepool in a 1-0 win and our first goal v Lokeren. Probably forgetting a few but hey versus ho. Missed a fair few goals after half time, particularly since the advent of being able to get a drink.
There was an injury just after as well, I was at a pub in Manchester, I'd been thinking I need a piss desperately, so seemed to be going quiet, I'll go now. **** get to the door & cheers go up, **** it, run back, see the replays, jump up & down with the other City fans who were there, then when all replays end, remember I still needed a piss, came back, ****ing 3 minutes injury!
3-1v Bradford at BP, Just got into the South Stand, I usually liked to be in the middle at the back, but due to getting there later than Normal I ended up in the SE corner, just in time to see Deano score a cracker. He also got sent off in that game too! There was still loads coming in after he'd scored!
I've never missed a goal by being late. But nearly did at Spurs away in the cup a couple of years back. A couple of mins in, I walked in from the concourse, realise there's people in my seats, Danny Graham misses a sitter, I shout "**** off" and found a few free seats together. I really ****ing hate Danny Graham.
That was the year that City scored their fastest ever goal. Quite a few on here would have been there and maybe some missed it!
Southend away about 10 years ago. Sure it was a night match and a late decision to go (from Wiltshire), arrived a couple of minutes late and a minute after we scored. Think we won one nil that night. Memory ain't what it used to be!
Another one. Hitchhiked to Norwich with my mate. Struggled for lifts got there with only twenty odd minutes left, score was 2-2 (Malcolm Lord scored both). Hiked back with a night spent in a haystack, but we could not get a lift from Thorne on Sunday afternoon (no motorways then) so we split up. I lost the toss so I walked ahead down the road. Oddly I got a lift despite them having to have passed my mate. The bloke that gave me a lift was a total speed nutter with no insurance. However all's well that ends well as I got home in time to see City on Anglia's match of the day at 5.00pm.My mate copuld not get a lift + got the train home.
We missed the goal Arse-nal scored at the Emirates a couple of years back. It was our very first trip on Tiger Travel (we usually go independently) and the M1 was closed near Leicester. The signs said it was closed for miles and miles before but the chump driving our coach carried on regardless, we were running up to the turnstiles when there was a massive cheer, yes the home fans celebrating an early goal. That experience has put me off TT for ever!
