Having spent a lot of time on the markets myself how about a mention for some of the traders of Hull market, when we had one..... Chick, auctioning towels and the latest kitchen gadget on the outdoor market ? Humprey the pot man from Leeds. Huge bloke, usually wearing a Leeds RL shirt. Sold pint tea mugs, tea pots, plates and stuff. Sold up to buy a Waltzers ride on the Fairgrounds. The one legged tool man on the outdoor market with a stall full of odd sizes of insulation tape that everyone said he got from 'Hessle tip' Massive wash leathers, spanners, screwdrivers, nuts and bolts and stuff to mend shoes. Folk lore was that he lost his leg in the war, he didn't it was lost in a motor bike accident. The camp bloke selling ex-juke box 45's with no middles. Indoor market, Fred Bird Butcher, Peter Rabbit game, Ted Key, Smokey Joe, Scouser Terry's cheap meat stall ( now on Holderness Road, I think) The Tool Man, Eric Cook,, the young girl selling 'fake' perfumes, Millies Bisuits, The Hare Brothers, John Mann and his meat auctions, Pick and Mix, The eccentric Fruit and Veg trader who used to sing opera, Sausage 'meat' sandwiches and mugs of builders tea from the little cafe...........all gone. The stamp and coin shop on Saville Street,, Arnetts Bakery..........now it's Tesco, Home Bargins, Poundland, Asda.................McDonalds. I know what I prefared.
Don't know if it's been mentioned but what was the comic shop on the corner of Anlaby Rd, opposite the bingo? I only went in a few times.
I remember Boots being on King Edward Street, not far from Victoria Square, and going upstairs and listening to the latest singles through headphones in one of the booths.
sorry if this has already been mentioned and I didn't spot it. there was store on Anlaby Road for selling/buying vinyl -- can't remember its name. I spent a lot of time in there in my later days at school and then vacations from Uni. I kind of regret selling a lot of it now but needs must. I still have a few hundred LPs and many more 45s but I must have flogged twice as many again.
Is that the one that was opposite what used to be Telephone House, now KCOM's offices? If so I must have sold dozens of lp's there in the late sixties.
John Sheridan worked at Book and Record Exchange, the little shop opposite Telephone House. Book and Record Exchange 'migrated' to Micklegate in York. JS took over that shop and later moved into a bigger shop near the Regent cinema.
This thread has brought back so many memories. The earliest being the day we moved from a flat on the Boulevard (near Queensgate St) to 27 Bacheler St. It was late 1952 and I was around 2 1/2 years old. In those early days, it seemed like there was a shop or business on every street corner, sweet shops, newsagents, green grocers, tobacconists, off licenses, the Post Office on Chomley Street and there was a quality grocery store (Gibbon's, I think) at the corner of our street. There was a barber shop on Chomley St., run by Greek Cypriots as I recall, that had black and white photos of Hull FC on the wall and you could ask for a cut in the style of Perry Como, Elvis or whatever the current style was. Funnily, we kids all came out looking the same with short back and sides. Many of the houses had a low concrete wall with the remains of the railings that were cut off to fuel the war effort and there were virtually no cars parked on the street. My dad had a car with his job so we went into the country to see primroses, daffodils, horse chestnut candles etc. And we had days out to With and Brid. Anyway, thanks for sharing your memories and rekindling some of mine. A final thought, I remember the first supermarket opening somewhere in the town centre in around 1962. Was it called Savemore? My cousin and I would shop there (having taken the 69 bus) for our mams and then we'd have tomato soup at the BHS lunch counter before heading home. Makes us sound like a pair of 12 year old OAPs.
Anyone remember the Chinese restaurant in the town center? think it was above Fletchers. Possibly the poshest place in town at that time.
anyone remember Brian's - the big blue van selling groceries etc round Greatfield in the 60's / 70's? also Carrick's corner near East Park a goody shop run by 2 old ladies & from where, to my shame, I used to steal the occasional Bounty etc the ladies were easily distracted...
