Off Topic Hull most 'missed' shops...

South for the last 6 seasons or so.

 

50 ****ing 4 Phil. Seems like yesterday we were nicking groceries

 

I remember the first shop been a gift shop thing ,then mackmans,I think it was then a small sweet shop called the " sweet cabin ?" A fruit shop than a small mini market we lived down Fairfield avenue

 

Why are so many people proud of thieving from some of these stores

 

Because we were paid peanuts and treated like dirt mainly.

 

I'm glad you find that a justification to help ruin the livelihood of hard working folk

A mate of mine , who now lives in Aus and went to Marist, emptied that shop a few days before it officially closed.........

 

Does make you wonder.

 

I'm pretty certain our Mackmans became a fish and chip shop (I'd moved by then). Also there already was a long time sweet shop called The Casket so I doubt there was a second sweet shop.

 

Hope he said a few Hail Mary's then.

Also remember AtCost on Newland Ave
Top Deck Records in Prinny Quay and
The plastic wrapper on a glass bottle of Lucozade (only for the poorly)

Lazzarini's sweet shop down southcoates lane, opposite the school.

Did a fine choc lick and made their own ice lollies which they sold at 2p and 3p (80s prices). You'd see kids walking around with dyed purple top lips after having one of those.

 

My old man used to stop at the little shop on the corner of Nicholson Street and Sculcoates Lane every Sunday after we'd been to Bev Rd swimming baths. Early 80's we're talking about.

Usually in a really embarrassing motor, he had a reliant three wheeler van in olive green and a mustard yellow Triumph Dolomite to name but two.

The same shop is still on the go with the same family running it, good people as well.

Got to be rare as that.

I have just read all 22 pages of this post and can see no reference to Balloon Stores in Paragon Street.
Seem to recall it was Boyes type emporium opposite side of the road from Sydney Scarborough.It had a downstairs also.

Also Mackmans Shops were supplied from a Backery site in Southcostes Lane East Hull.

 

I certainly remember going into Balloon Stores with my mother to buy baking utensils.

 

I was there 1970 - 1978 i think.

When i was there i started in the infants and some of the teachers i remember were'

Mrs Spencer (lived down Southfield as i used to go home that way sometimes)
Miss Coupland (I'm sure i was distantly related to her somehow)

The highlight of the infant school was the visit by wpc whatshername with her remote control dog that had the reflective armband on, and always ended up the presentation (don't talk to strangers, don't cross behind parked cars etc), doing a backflip)

Junior school had some of the ones you both mentioned

Mr Swinson ( I always thought his name was Richard, so i'm probably wrong again!!)

I am sure i was in Dickens (or that could have been when i went to Grammar after)

I think Mr Welbourne was head when i started and was replaced by Miss Bruce when he retired.
