I wonder how many people drowned in that drain, was born down Gorden Ave. Chapman street which backed onto the drain, we left there when I was five but can still recall watching them dragging 3 bodies out of that drain
Log burners - less dirty, there's a place in North Cave that Kiln Dries logs, all local wood - they burn a treat and pump out some heat. I'm a convert from coal.
Did you get coal delivered because in our house we had fires but we had something called coke which was supposedly smokeless?
There is a kiln drier in the village and his logs burn brilliantly. Low moisture content and all that.
Coal was the first fires I can remember. Coke came along later, as we moved houses. I burn logs here - I was given a wood-burner and fitted it myself. My neighbour is a tree-surgeon. Loads of wood and I've got a chainsaw and a good axe.
What percentage are we looking at the the moisture content? No need to be exact, a rough estimate will suffice.
Can't remember who our coal man was but I remember the black streak across the living room ceiling left by him carrying sacks of coal through to our back yard. Dust bins and all came through there too. No rear access at all. Coupland Terrace of Sculcoates Lane. Long gone I think. When coke came in I used to have to go to the gas works down St Marks Street with my little sisters tansad for it.
A few years ago now my mate bought a house in Preston with his bird. While he was out at work Willie the coalman knocked on the door asking if they wanted any for their open fire? She got talking to him and yadda yadda, struggling to pay the mortgage newly married etc. So about 70 year old Willie says well theres more than one way to pay for your Coal luv... Oh great you take debit card then, she says!! Dopey bint My mate pissed himself when she told him.
