The main sponsors of the OSC are an Icelandic company with an office in Hull (Seagold and Ice Fresh Seafood).

If you get to Vancouver, I recommend you spend a few days on Vancouver Island. Spectacular place. Taking one of several available ferries from Vancouver is an enjoyable experience. Be sure you get to the Pacific coast at the northern tip of the island (Tofino).
    Gastown's a fun place indeed.
Also a drive inland to Whistler is a must. Skiing in the winter or mountain hiking in the summer. Some excellent golf courses if you're into golf.

Some 15 years ago my daughter went to Vancouver with her then Canadian boyfriend and loved it. However she went to one club where the ladies and gents toilets were in the same area and opposite each other. To her surprise the ladies cubicles didn't have doors on them.I assume she was in a funky upmarket club?

It's a quaint Canadian tradition to leave doors off cubicles. I first experienced that in Sudbury in 1968 when working in the processing mills of International Nickel (Inco). The management years earlier had removed the doors on the crappers in the changing rooms because too many workers were sneaking off for a nap therein during their shifts !!
Presumably a similar reason for the design in the old Gastown bars to prevent the hookers from hiding from their pimps:emoticon-0105-wink:

I think our British prudishness still prevails. In Europe (France & Italy in particular - but likely in many other places in more Eastern European states) they didn't seem to give a **** on the privacy front. Public bogs were essentially holes in the ground with flimsy boards around 'em, where you could see the legs of the punters up to their knees - in the middle of village squares.
In fact, I seem to remember a TV series in the early 60's set in some small town in France which was all centred on the village square toilettes.
We seem to be a long way off topic. How's the match going ?<laugh>

17 hours each way? Our trips were like that but return. Aye well, luxury you might say but we did sleep in holes in the ground under cardboard rather than hotels. Nobody danced on our graves though.

I agree with all this -- used to head up to Vancouver/Whistler/Blackcomb fairly often during my time in Oregon. Fantastic places.

It's funny how Omega Man's original enquiry about Hamilton, ON has turned into a travelogue of Canada so I have to add my two cents (or two pennyworth [pronounced pennuth, of course]). It's been my good fortune to have visited every province, from Cape Spear (Newfoundland) the most easterly point in North America to Tofino, BC which is one of the most westerly points in Canada. Oh, and each has something spectacular and worthwhile to visit.

Omega, I have never been to Hamilton but apparently at one time, a local Scottish football team had a tartan, artificial turf, football pitch. That probably doesn't help but it is an interesting footnote.

Whittling, tigerscanada has given good advice about going to Vancouver Island and if you are a gardener you'll regret not going to Butchart Gardens which is not far from Victoria where you'll experience one of the world's most spectacular gardens. In case you experience withdrawal, great fish and chips can be had in Victoria at Barb's or Red Fish, Blue Fish and Spinnakers is a great brew pub and restaurant. It's a pretty long drive from Victoria to Tofino but worth it and Cathedral Grove near Port Alberni (along the way, is worth a walk and viewing). Finally, if you want a trip to a hippier age, Saltspring Island (especially the Saturday market) is a worthwhile experience and you never know who you might run into including Randy Bachman or even one our posters, "Canadatiger," if he still lives there. Just like a UK holiday, take rain gear.

Indeed I am - thanks so much for remembering for me. I now will search for the DVD - it was hilarious. Somehow I thought it was an earlier TV production - but maybe it was on TV over here in Canada or the US - possibly PBS's Masterpiece theatre with Alastair Cook.
    Cheers.

Good stuff tigerincanada. Those gardens you mention are wonderful, and if I remember Cathedral Grove is one of the few pieces of natural rain forest left in North America - definitely worth a visit. Qualicum Beach, just North of Nanaimo on the Georgia Strait is worth a stop (if I recall it has a seal colony ?).
Pick the right day, some of the most spectacular lightening storms on earth can be found around Tofino, and a surfers paradise to boot (Ucluelet ?)..

Long Beach (and it is very long) is located between Tofino and Ucluelet and the surfing is brilliant but the water is ****ing cold and wet suits are essential year round (my daughter and her partner are regulars there). I believe the storms are particularly spectacular viewed from Ucluelet and in the fall (autumn) to winter. I guess people come from all over the world to be thrilled or disappointed (you never can tell with weather) so check before booking as tigerscanada and I are not on commission and will not be held liable if you visit and don't like it.

If you do visit and don't like it, consider therapy against a lost cause!

As a point of interest, Ucluelet is pronounced, "you-clue-let" unless the Allams are visiting and then it's, "you-clue-less-****s."

Tofino can, apparently, be pronounced, "Toff-fino or Too-fino." If I can find the true answer and if ayone cares, I'll post it.

tigerscanada, perhaps we should start a visit Canada thread. Could we make money (that's the Yorkshire way)?

I lived in Edmonton (near Southgate Mall) back in the late eighties early nineties. Is the rivalry with Calgary as strong as ever? Go Oilers
