I'm quite looking forward to seeing Sohbi play for Stoke, he should start tomorrow night. Be a good test for whoever plays at full back.
Marshall Elmo maguire Davies Tymon Henriksen Mason Wier Keane Mbokani Maloney 1-1 on 90 mins. 2-2 on 120 mins. 4-2 to City on pens.
This has a "typical city" feel to it, playing a team who haven't won in the league yet and can't stop conceding, we'll turn up and let them kick start their season!
A controversial England international player came to Hull City from Stoke City in the early 50's for a few seasons after a spell in Columbia, being banned from football when he arrived back in England. Neil Franklin was one of my all time favourite City players. He was born in Stoke and died there.
Cheers Quill - Will never forget that 70/71 cup game. Not many players managed a brace against Banks in those days. The last cup game I ever saw at B.P.
Not too many players managed 2 against Peter Bonetti at Stamford Bridge either! Still searching for that footage and now on my bucket list!
Me too Mr B_M_B. My problem is I don't have any mates who are Chelsea fans and (I may have mentioned before) my inquiries with TV channels (Anglia/Lincs TV I think it was) and a couple of Chelsea forums were fruitless. We'll find it eventually I hope. Maybe we should contact Waggy ?
A good idea. Yardley Tiger will be back to just outside Hull for 6 months from next March. Am sure he is the man for the job. PS. Cheers for your chase to secure any footage. I was at the Chelsea end behind the net and all the goals were scored at the other end!
I'll send my sister & brother-in-law a note as they are friends of Ray Pettit & his wife, who was a team member in the "60's golden era". He may be able to help with our odyssey. just looking at my programme from the March '71 City v Stoke cup match. Couple of interesting short notes in it: 1) They announce the signings of Ken Knighton (hard bugger he was) and Bill Baxter (won the League Div 1 championship with Ipswich in '61-62 with Sir Alf) who was less successful with City. 2) A short article on the previous meeting with Stoke in the FAC in 48/49. That day we beat 'em 2-0 at the Victoria ground in the 5th round, prior to the epic match at B.P. against Man U. in the quarter-final (always the 6th round in my currency !) which you know very well. They cite the City team that day as: ...............Bly .......Taylor Berry Greenhalgh Meens Mellor .......Jensen Buchan Harrison Moore Carter The long defunct 2-3-5 format. My granddad never stopped talking about the game....walking from Anlaby Common to BP as he rushed me to the City games as an 8 year old in '54. For years after, though never ever having seen him play, I always thought Buchan was Charlie Buchan of Sunderland, Arsenal & England and "Football Monthly" magazine fame !! Turns out it was Willie Buchan. a Scot.
Was that the "Shed" end you were in ? I was there too, hitch-hiked from Leeds but for the life of me can't remember which end I was in, may have been somewhere close to the half-way line as I seem to recall Waggy's goals clearly (despite being short sighted). Wish Osgood hadn't recovered for the replay - he was dominant at B.P. the following mid-week. Monstrous crowd. Great goal by Simpkin.
Players came out on my right so I was in the South-Shed end . Got my ticket when working in London so was among the Chelsea faithful with my dinner plate sized City rosette. Had a great day( and night when I met Osgood ) as I have recounted previously on here.
I was at that game too (the replay, that is). I remember we were chanting Osgood, no good. Unfortunately, he Wasgood! Last November, you posted that the 2-2 game was televised on Anglia (26/Mar Chelsea 2 (Tambling, Graham) Hull City 2 (Wagstaff 2) [FA Cup QF] *Sounds like Camkin commentating ************). Does Anglia still exist and could the film/video still exist?
I think it gave up it's franchise identity a few years ago ( maybe 10 or 12 years)...so any film sport film footage archives, if retained, would exist somewhere in the bowels of ITV Broadcasting Limited. I haven't contacted them yet.
Willie was a master penalty taker who throughout his career of many clubs never missed one. Had a unique style which as a kid I practiced for hours in a field near our house, kicking a ball against the wall of our Newsagent's shop. I subsequently took the penalties for all the teams I played for and never missed either. Well there was one! Playing in Hull in the 50's I approached the ball and deliberately only rolled it forward a yard or so to my right and my captain ran in and scored. Over 40 years later in the PL I watched Pires and Henry try this for Arsenal and they completely cocked it up, much to the chagrin of Wenger and the amusement of myself.
Got to quarrel with you there. Put a fried breakfast on top of it and you have the most delicious edible plate.
James Fletcher @Fletch7694 So can we do it on a cold night in Stoke? We've never won away in the 3rd rd or better of the #EFLCup since its creation! #HullCity
