North made a good point in a thread that we broke records last year in the toughest league in the world with the biggest prize ... The Premiership. The maths and facts are there for all to see yet many still think this mighty step up is so big that we are going to buckle because we now have a poor slow defence. we have added great additions to the squad to win games and have a shape about us. You defend from the front when you don't have the ball and maybe they will be longer times when we don't have the ball this coming season. We ate pressure for breakfast last year and 25 times stood firm so comment away please i am sleeping easy and so is the man who built this current team NW.

Simple answer yes we do still need defenders. Although we broke records last year from my experience there were plenty of times we got exposed & only bad ball/finishing or Kenny saving is the reason we had the records & don't think we should be resting on on laurels & hope we get away the same this year against superior opposition.

You can't stand still in football, we were fortunate at times last season and we are not going to get away with it against the big boys. I think we need two full backs and a centre back to improve, it's the only way to stay up.

I think the key word is pace. Premier league strikers have a lot of it, our defenders do not!

So, yes we need some defenders.

Well put DT.........I have resisted joining this QPR forum (after The B's 606) because one of the joining questions 'What does 2+2 =' has always had my head spinning. Anyway I decided to bite the bullet, and get my calculator out, and circumnavigate the problem, so here I am.

As I say 'well put' The 1st bit of real sense I have seen written here, NW may not have been able to spend, spend or spend, but A Carroll/£35m. against ... Jay B/£0 ...DJ C £1.25 plus the best defence the Championship has seen. QPR may not win the Prem this year, but they certainly won't be relegated! Every team would want more, but let's be realistic - keep NW and this team are top 10 any day.

    Thanks Hun x
Dont be afraid of this lot on here I am on this for one reason to raise spirits as we have been through a lot as QPR and the tone of Not 606/QPR is one of doom and gloom and the English way. Its all come from last season and infected us all ... stay positive brother

Well said, you firmly hit the nail on the head with youir comment. I think there wil be large spells when we wont see the ball this season. Our ability to counter at pace will be very important. We have reasonable pace in our midfield and Jay and DJ offer us genuine pace up front that we have not had for several years. Our weakness will be our full backs and their lack of pace and mobility. Their inability to get forward and in behind a back four will hurt us. Gabidon seems to have reasonable pace so i'm not too worried about our CBs. Although i would love to see us snap up Upson.

I concur with what most are saying on this thread.

PL strikers will punish teams where Championship strikers would not.

I've been accused of being the most optimistic one here - and I KNOW that even the best ever Championship defence could easily be cruelly exposed against most Premiership attacks.

We need pace to ensure our solid, dependable defenders are in the right place at the right time to stop the ball getting anywhere near the goal.

Of course - you only do blind optimism.

You should try reality once in a while. Oh - and practice your irony and sarcasm - you're not very good at it yet.

By your standards, Hulse should have no problems against any Premiership defence, so why bother signing Jay or DJ? And One Size will be ableto cope with the likes of Rooney, Tevez, and Van Persie, so that's fine. We don't need anyone who can move faster than a brisk jog.

My sarcasm was aimed purely at Ciarrai_Abu for popping at HungarianRanger. Read the thread. I simply don't agree with the tosh on here its so far off the mark.... and a sad reflection.

On Hulse: the lad is simply a squad player and i have read threads by seniors saying how JB and DJ aren't good enough.

    We also have to cope with: C Sammon H Rodallega M Fortune P Odemwingie D Graham L Moore S Dobbie A Gyan C Wickham R Fuller K Jones G Holt S Morison P Lovenkrands D Ba J Hernandez E Dzeko M Balotelli S Aguero B Zamora L Saha D Drogba F Torres K Davies N Kalinic D Bent Gervinho R van Persie

Well done again Dave, ( The ball goes wide ) Great post.
Personally I think that everyone steps up to their full potential when circumstances dictate.
I can only measure this on the following,
    I love playing table-tennis.
If I play someone who is not as good as me, I pull my shots a bit and let them have a bit of a game.
    That is a losers psychology.
If i'm playing someone better than me, I raise my game all out, and do my damdest to win.
If the opponent who is better than me adopts the 1st scenario, I will beat them.
If in the 2nd scenario the opponent is a real pro, & plays to the best of his ability, regardless of who he is playing, the lesser player will never win.
No matter how much he raises his game, I will raise mine.
That my friend is the situation we have.
