Put yourself in clubs shoes. Lose him this summer for £10m while paying him £20k a week. Lose him summer after for 0 while paying him 20k a week. Or, say to him, we'll give you a new contract worth 40k a week with a new release clause that you can go to a foreign club for £20m which isn't totally unreasonable price for a young talented prospect with what will be 3 years league experience. He gets 100% pay rise, they get 100% more in transfer fee, everyones happy. No one's saying the release clause will be £50m and he's pricing himself out a move.
