I'm just pissed off that Shad singled out FLT for being the most positive person on here. I thought that was my role. (no blue font, no smileys)

I have been trying to understand my role on here and then I realised I don't have one. It can't even be for being very annoying as there are more argumentative buggers than me who win that title hands down on these threads.

As for the player I'll be honest I've never heard of him but from reading his main attributes doesn't seem like he fits the diamond.

Though the board clearly know more n it's a position we need so hopefully it works out n he proves us all wrong.

I don't know, man. He's not like some dude timewarped in from the 50's where all he does is kick the crap out of the ball because bending it was impossible, and if you tried anything fancy someone would just punch you in the face.

He's a promising striker. And he wouldn't be a promising striker if he were completely one-dimensional in some way, because you really can't succeed that way in the modern game.

And within the confines of the modern game, you will ALWAYS need a striker. I don't care what formation you play, you need someone who generically fulfills the job duty of putting the ball in the back of the net. Doesn't matter how you do it, any formation can deal with playing it to head vs feet or leading a fast guy vs right on target to a guy with back to the goal. Apparently Puel really likes him, and Koeman supposedly wanted him as well, so there's at least a modicum of support that he can play either in our 4-1-2-1-2 or the 4-2-3-1 system.

I think it's a fair question to ask whether a striker should be our highest priority right now. And, if we want to go back to 4-2-3-1, maybe not. We could probably use a winger more than a striker if we're going that way.

But it's still hard for me to hate on this deal too much if we get him at the rumored price. As far as I'm concerned, a promising young striker-- or really any promising young player at any position-- at a decent price is always a good purchase. Maybe not the BEST purchase, but still a good one. Even if he is just the understudy to Austin for a year or two, we will be able to use him at some point.

We should, IMO, still have the funds to purchase a winger if we choose, or whatever other position we think is of highest priority. If we don't get one in and it ends up costing us, I would question our failure to bring in that position, rather than our having bought Haller. If it turns out we somehow don't have the funds, I would question the many extensions we handed out rather than this.

He's certainly young enough, and new enough to top-level football (about eighteen months in the Eredivisie after scattered appearances in Ligue 2) that he could well refine his overall game. But in the short-and-medium terms, he's likely to be pretty dependent on good service in a system that allows him to focus primarily on what he's good at. I wouldn't mind him, but in terms of impact this season, another tricky sort and a tactical switch that'd allow several such to play together might have a greater impact on our goal tally.

Also, my occasional plea: if you want to pass time watching football involving two teams you couldn't possibly care about, watch the Eredivisie. There are generally Saturday matches beginning shortly after the PL games end, it's loaded with talented young players, and defense is completely optional and possibly forbidden.

Some people on here (not naming any names) really post with an unmistakable air of superiority and entitlement. They seem to forget that this is a forum and anyone who chooses to post here has the freedom to be overcritical, overly dramatic, pessimistic, they can wet their bed, throw their toys out of the pram, spit their dummy out, hack pieces out of a player that they thought had a bad game, lambaste the club or chairman for the decisions they make and they can do this regardless of their joined date and post count. Some of the posts in this thread are embarrassing. It's like there is some sort of code of conduct, people you shouldn't disagree with or cross. Nobody's opinion is worth more than anyone else's, otherwise it's a not a forum by definition.

I tend not to have much knowledge on players in European leagues. When Pelle and Lovren signed I was disappointed just because of the opinion of some on here who knew who they both were whereas I hadn't a clue. When Gaston signed I was excited again because of the opinions of some on here. Gaston turned out pretty crap and the other two were both pretty good, so these days I tend to just wait and see.

And there I was hacked off that it wasn't me. I consider myself to be optimistic to a level that might be classed as "mindless"

It's OK Godders, you might not be the most argumentative but you're just as annoying as anybody else on here, never fear. I think you are the easy winner in the grumpy old git category so embrace it, revel in it and don't ever worry about losing that title - you might misplace it, you might be wearing it and not realise like a pair of glasses on your forehead, and you might walk into a room to look at it, and then wonder what you went in there for, but the title is YOURS :emoticon-0105-wink:

By that logic, people have every right to post with "an unmistakable air of superiority and entitlement", because it's a forum and they can say what they like, how they like...
I don't get why people can't just look at a post, decide they don't like the style or content and just bloody ignore it, or counter the argument or point without wingeing about whether someone posts in a tone that they don't like.
If someone comes out with a negative view, then others who don't agree will counter it, criticise it and try and change that view, same with positive comments...that's just people being people. I treat the posters that annoy me like a bloke who sits in the corner of the pub muttering to himself - I know he's there, I can hear what he's saying, but he ain't going to spoil my pint.

Well there you go guys....just shows you how easy it it is to get the topic of the thread discussing everything else rather than the subject of the Thread.
Just as all people are welcome on this Forum ....so is all opinions. Most threads are football based we have special threads for non football topics.
Personal differences should not be discussed on open forums...please bear that in mind. Lets get this thread back on the original posters subject please. Ta Each muchly..............BT

For the old 'uns on here!! Could he be a distant relative of Helmut Haller (West German forward 1966)? If he is as good as Helmut, this is going to be good business.

Thinking back to England 1966 we can see all the reasons why England won the World Cup. Fast forward 50 years to the current England team and we can see all the reasons why England won't win the next world cup ------ as they are too busy getting tattoos and silly signatures in their hair instead of doing as Alan Ball used to do --- using his spare time improving his skills before heading off the race track.
