Think some may have already been shown.. verdict? Is it a good idea to try and remake some of the classic oldies? Alf Garnett, it cant work today, so what is the point of trying. They will do Benny Hill next. ........... Leave them alone ffs. celebrate 60 years since Hancock’s Half Hour began, a raft of prequels, sequels and remakes are coming to BBCs 1, 2 and 4 this summer. Keeping Up Appearances, Are You Being Served??, Porridgeand Up Pompeii! are getting modern follow-ups by today's comedy writers, while Steptoe and Son, Till Death Do Us Part and Hancock’s Half Hour itself will see ‘lost’ episodes remade on BBC4. Are You Being Served? is a direct continuation of the department store sitcom, set in 1988 with a new cast. Prison comedy Porridge, originally starring Ronnie Barker, will follow Fletch’s grandson as he’s banged up for cybercrimes. Young Hyacinth is a one-off special following the snooty Mrs Bucket (pronounced Bouquet, we're led to believe) as she tries to move from lower middle class to the ranks of the upper middle class. Classics all, but it’s BBC4 that might feature the biggest culture shcok – the bigoted Alf Garnett in Till Death Do Us Part is a long way from today’s politically correct culture.
Remakes have destroyed the film industry now they want to destroy British Comedy? Great stuff. Just destroy everything because people can't be arsed to think. It's yank mentality. Its poisoning our society through every orifice. We're getting american style Adverts with jingles now, being spoken at by american accents. What's happening to our country? We're being swallowed up be the US. 51st state.
We have indeed, but it was way more subtle. Now it's just crudely shoved in our face without shame. And seemingly accepted unfortunately.
I watched Are You Being Served last night and found it really funny. It was just a one off tribute to the original show. The jokes were much nearer the knuckle than the original show and I lost count of how many times Mrs Slocumb's pussy was mentioned! As for Porridge, which was a pilot show.... Absolutely garbage!
Good, that's British comedy at it's finest, let america remake that. Leave everything else alone. Richard Curtis worte that with an american market in mind as he did with all his films. You want proper Richard Curtis, go and watch Blackadder, proper comedy, written for Brits. It's gritty, brutal without a sight of the cheesiness that the US seem to lap up. Seriously, US have taken from us and remade The Office, Shameless, Ab fab, are you being served, Bad Education, Birds of a feather, Dads Army, Gavin and Stacy, George and Mildred, The Inbetweeners, Man behaving badly, on the busses, one foot in the grave, outnumbered, Porridge, Steptoe and Son, Teachers, Upstairs Downstairs, and whos line is it anyway.(You've changed the name on many of these) Is Chuck Lorre the only comedy writer with his own mind over there?
Are you being served porridge?.........Well, yes and it actually tastes better than half the cheap cooking, talent and house sales programmes we've been served over the last few years. I'm looking forward to the rehash next week about a southern football team training for the keepie-uppie cup, it's called Keeping Up Pompeii.
I plan a remake of last of the summer wine, with Bob deniro playing Compo, Joe pesci playing Clegg, Arny Swartz playing Foggy, Julia Roberts as Nora batty, Joan Collins playing the café owner Ivy, Jason statham as the mechanic !. opening scene, there is a drug deal going down at the Ivy's cafe 3 kilo's of Colombian coke and Compo walks into the café with his dirty wellies on and shouts " eeup darling let's have cuppa before a gets mad !" suddenly Clegg jumps from behind the counter with a 12 gauge shot gun shouting mother ******** and the gang run out of the shop.
Couldn't disagree more Dorset. I still don't know why or how they thought they could reproduce AYBS again. I thought it was absolutely dreadful. Didn't laugh once. But then that's what humour is all about. We all find it in different ways. Radio 4 have been updating old Hancock episodes. And they're about as funny as toothache. I just don't get this need to try and make old stuff funny again. They were of an age that has long gone. As tributes go, they're appalling. And that Porridge episode last night should be just quietly and discretely forgotten about. For the sake of everyone involved in it. If you want to watch Porridge, or Yes Minister, Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads, etc, etc, they're still out there on tv. Don't insult them by trying to update them!
We stole Impractical Jokers from the US and it's embarrassing, I was cringing watching it. I think if there's money to be made, producers/writers will sell the product regardless of the reputation damage that follows. Ricky Gervais has made a mint selling his product, I bet he ****ing hates the US Office.
Makes sense. You ever watched Mob Wives? ****ing mental, they have some beef on there, makes this board seem like the Playbus!
Shameless on Showtime (US) is, well - shameless! And funny as hell. They couldn't change the name on that one as none other would do. I don't recognize many of those other titles but I'm going to look around. Thanks for the tip.
