Maybe Phelan was reading these threads last season as some of us were calling for Bruce to play Thudds forward, but he focused on Diame who was a 'now you see him, now you don't' player. I want a manager who can recruit players and then coach them to play the style of football he wants - or thinks he wants. A manager who knows a round peg from a square hole.
I wouldn't want Bruce to return. I think the way he was treat is disgusting and I wasn't happy with the way he was forced out but I will admit I wanted him to leave before all of this. Bringing him back would be a backwards step and I believe he has taken us as far as he can. I hate his style of negative and boring football which consists of defending, getting down wings crossing into the box and no plan B. Greatest manager we have ever had but things needed freshening up with a new style and philosophy. Southampton got rid of Nigel Adkins and where brave and brought in Pochettino and look where that got them. It was so refreshing to see Phelan's changed style and I want to see a different brand of football. Thanks Bruce, but no more.
Dio has always looked good running with the ball, he then loses it because he has no idea where to put it, nothing's changed from last season to last Saturday!
That weird over hit cross field ball to elmo was strange, and he had a few other instances like it where he should have shot.
I was a supporter of Steve through thick and thin. I wanted him to continue this year and think he could have done a good job for us. By which I mean keep us up, had he been given the resources. I think the club shat on him to be frank. However, it's time to move on. I'm a like wary of jumping on the Mikey P bang-wagon after one match but who knows he's an unknown force at this level in the top job so he could go either way. If he gets a few more points before we get a takeover finalized then he may get the job if not I think a new owner may bring in someone with more experience as a number 1. If we don't get taken over he'll keep the job with the squad he's got and god bless him.
If Diomande gets more of a run in the team hopefully he can work out more of an understanding with players. A good manager should get more out of him I feel.
I think he'll surprise a few people this season. Hopefully that synchronized goal will give him a bit more confidence to shoot. As things stand we'll need him too.
New owners , new approach , new ideas , new ambitions , new start, new chapter, new manager for me. Thanks SB but time to move on and reignite our roar.
I seem to remember Ian Ormondroyd scoring one for us away against Bristol Rovers (?) off his the back of his head! The other players went running off celebrating and he just looked confused.
Can I answer this question when we have made an appointment? If we get someone better than SB then I would be very happy, but if we appoint a dud then SB would have been my choice. I know this does not say much, but I am concerned that we might well end up with someone not as good as SB, who to be fair has been very good for us.
I think this thread shows just how fed up people were after last season. Like ability is one thing, but the poor bloke didn't know where to turn and the players (play off final aside) just looked shagged, there wasn't really any direction or tactical nous if we went behind. Steve will always be a favourite here, but at some point you have to say enough and look at different options going forward. Phelan has given us 3 PL points we probably weren't expecting, but if he can't get them against the likes of Boro and Bournemouth then it'll quickly become tricky for him. City fans have a habit of liking people who try, but aren't necessarily good enough (it remains to be seen where MP falls, not tarring him with that brush just yet), an indictment of our working class background, but in the Premier League, the roll your sleeves up attitude isn't going to win you games consistently; it might surprise one or two, but at this level you need players of quality and a manager who is going to get the best out of them week in, week out and I don't think Bruce would have done that. If Phelan can, then I'm right behind him. If not, then let's have somebody in who can get our lads winning games.
He is raw talent, I am sure there is a ton of improvement to come which can only be good for us, and the technique for his goal was sensational, if he has that ability there is a player there for us this season
He just looked confused a lot of the time it was his natural look, he was a bit of a our Rodney was Ormondroyd!
I think it just shows what a lot of shallow know-nowt wise-after-the event happy clapper type fans we have. Not sure how good MP is /will be as a manager, but I do know I have seen some fantastic debuts by loan players at City who flattered to deceive and were soon revealed as one trick ponies, or charlatans. Remember Bostock? Or even Peter Barnes, Terry Curran, Paul Moss or John Hickton?
I believe you're right bringing up his confidence as an issue. On the "double" bicycle kick goal, he knew he had hit the ball, but was totally undemonstrative in celebrating that fact, allowing Abel to take the glory. That incident alone indicates he's quite a shy lad, lacking self belief at the moment. At the end of the celebration, it appeared to me that Abel acknowledged that there was some doubt in his mind that he himself might not have got the last touch.. I also noticed just before the 2nd half kick-off, Clucas put his arm round Diomande, clearly offering him encouragement. Incidents like this should help build his confidence levels, when team-mates are openly recognizing his contribution to the cause. Like you, I think he'll surprise us all this season if he gets a decent run in the side. I hope he grasps the chance.
