Most countries award financial incentives for medals to the atheletes. We don't. They do it for team GB.
Have to say I feel inspired by what I've seen to date. So much so, that I WANT to be part of Team GB at the next Olympics. I just have to find the right event to compete in. Triathlon maybe.... Also get some of that Lottery Funding, I've put plenty in, so just fair I get some of it back.
Its great to see other countries asking how we manage to peak just in time for the Olympics. We've been asking the same questions of the German national football team for years now.
Me too! I'm just hoping they make darts an Olympic sport. And then I become really good darts. Somehow.
This is not strictly trueAlbert. Funding for individual athletes is based on performance in olympics and world championships and assessed ability to be on the podium in upcoming events. Check this link for more details. http://www.uksport.gov.uk/our-work/investing-in-sport/how-uk-sport-funding-works Its means tested so that the athletes witth big sponsorship deals dont get it but its a tremendous incentive for those that do. The policy was instigated after Atlanta 1996 and has resulted in the spectacular improvement since then. I for one am happy to see my tax money spent in this way. Mainly because I dont pay UK tax!
I wish our footballers were a bunch of rich kids using our money.....oh wait, they are.....and yet can't win a medal for toffee
My working class friend's daughter is a young gymnast and trampolinist. They've spent a lot of time and their money on supporting her and watching her for the past four years.
I've just remembered I can't swim, cycle or run so I might struggle a bit in the Triathlon. Darts, is more like it.
That's the vehicle to the achievement, not the lump sum payment at the end. Most don't have normal jobs as they give so much to the sport.
