Haha, the gymnastics was okay, but when I saw the 7s was on BBC4 I had to swap. The Japanese beat the French with a last minute try, then we win like that! Amazing.
6 medals won today, all in different sports. And still Willis to come in the 200m Breaststroke overnight..... Does anyone know what our most successful day ever in terms of number of medals won in Olympics is?
Not sure, but it most likely would have been part of the London Olympics in several of the events where GB were a bit of a powerhouse in 2012, which would be Cycling, Rowing, Sailing, Boxing, certain events in Athletics and a couple of other sports here and there. I'm old enough to still think of GB as plucky contestants and to get the odd Silver and Bronze being wonderful, and a rare Gold absolutely miraculous. But these days GB is often the best or in the top 3 at very many sports. Wasn't it Super Saturday, with Greg Rutherford, Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis.? In London 2012 the Cyclists seemed to sweep all before them. I think they ended up with a silly number of Golds all on their own.
The Rugby 7s has been immense. Let's hope it is retained for the next Olympics. I haven't watched any football but would I be wrong in thinking that it may be rather turgid. Perhaps it should be replaced with 5 aside football!! Really delighted for GBs divers, gymnasts and kayakers!!! It just goes to show what the country is capable when there is investment in sport .
It was interesting hearing Eddie Butler comment about Team GBs try scorer, Bibby, being a specialist 7s player. 5 aside football ( footsol) is immensely popular in Spain and commands a slot on the one terrestrial sporting channel. And players who are great 5 asiders would be useless in the 11 aside game and I suppose the same would apply for a 11 aside player. We have seen this development of specialist players emerge in cricket .
Ides, do you mean Futsal? That is a fantastic sport for developing technique and ball control. It is played here, but not enough.
Yes, yes, yes. Delete football from the Olympics, play futsal instead. GB could probably enter as the FA wouldn't get so pretentious about it.
The only football I watch in the Olympics is actually the Paralympic 5 a side football for visually impaired athletes. It's pretty interesting: https://www.rio2016.com/en/paralympics/football-5-a-side
