I've read a lot about modern western diet , it's killing us. Factory processed food is the worst , devoid of natural vitamins and minerals our bodies need and full of chemicals we struggle to process. I worked 17 years in food manuf. for a global household brand. Their goals and targets were always more market share , more profit , lower cost , no targets to do with health etc. The processed food industry makes us ill, then the pharmaceutical industry sells us pills to treat our ailments.
Average life of an egg producing hen is a few years. Then slaughteted. Natural life span is 11 to 15 years so no financial benefit to keep alive. Average life span of male chick is ten seconds. Then it is thrown alive into a grinder to make a nutritious animal feed. All those lovely dairy products you consume are courtesy of depriving calves of same - they get a milk replacement concoction and are separated from their mothers. A field of young forlorn calves is a sight to behold while the calls of their mothers from the other side of the farm is loud and harrowing, but hey you need that yoghurt. Male calves have a life span of three months. This is to ensure that you can enjoy lovely white tender veal. All that is necessary is to cage the calf so that it cannot move for that period. There are vegans who live on dark chocolate & peppermint sweets and there are vegans on healthy diets. There are noisy promulgator vegans who love its trendiness but quietly revert to their real selves after three months on "Doctors orders because of low iron" And there are very quiet vegans who live and let live and do so on ethical grounds. So, like any other grouping there are a diversity of Vegan types - don't fall into the convenient trap of lumping them all together.
Sorry if that came across as criticising you, that really wasn't my intention, you absolutely can be an ethical ova-lactic vegetarians as you clearly are. However I don't believe you're in the majority, most use supermarkets believing 'organic and free range' actually mean something there, I'm not sure if they know the extent of what they are buying or just choose to ignore it but its far from ethical.
My youngest daughter is vegan and has been for 2 years, she is still a teenagr and initially I was concerned but she eats healthily, and she doesn't lecture others. She also witnessed city beating Bristol city last season when I was back so she is now a fan as well of City.So basically I have no problems as she cooks me some vegan meals.i still eat meat though
I've no problem with vegans ,tho the 4 I know each talk about little else , spend most of their time searching for a food that tastes ok , reading up on often exaggerated horror stories on food - (the microbes in certain German cheese rinds was a great example ) The wearing of leather hypocrisy, the use of fossil fuel hypocrisy ,the massive energy burning of internet servers they use when going on a Twitter rant Other than that I don't give much of a **** .
I love eating meat, I love the idea I am eating something I have fought and killed with my bare hands. And from time to time I like eating things still alive. Cue some bright spark suggesting pussy.
No, I didn't see it as criticism, and as I put, you have a point about organic produce. I know an organic farmer that waters his onion field from a well that the waterworks has closed down because they cannot clean the herbicide and pesticide residues it contains. So much for organic onions. On the other hand, in such an over-populated country as the UK, what is a city-dweller to do? If I was scratching a living in an urban setting, I am sure I'd be grateful for anything that was just a little better than industrial food. I still wouldn't eat dead animals though.
Plants are living things and feel just like you or I. To grow them purely for our own palate is cruel and evil. We should all try and cut vegetables and fruit out of our diet.
I'm a meat eater, always have been and enjoy it immensely. I would consider reducing my meat intake though, on both health grounds and environmental. Beef production for example is a major strain on the environment. I think we're at a point where it's worth having a bit of a think before gorging now.
