Had the weekend down in London (just on the train back) it was certainly a massive event over the two days. We got caught up in it both days, with various road closures etc. but looked like everyone was having a great time.
I went to Ravenscar today for a 'walk' down to the 'Alum' works - I thought I hope I don't meet any ****ing Egyptians! Anyway there was this fat fella (20 plus stone) coming up the hill on a full suspension bike with what looked like one of those electric power motors that kicks in when it gets tough. I thought that defeated the object really - but fair play to him for 'trying'. Part of the Cleveland way - looked decent terrain for off road riding.
I work in central London and this event is a total ball ache for anyone who has to work at the weekend.
We have been down too cheering our son in the Surrey100 race although it was stop-start a lot because of a couple of very bad accidents. Heading back on Hull Trains tomorrow.
Reference there to Hull Thursday club brings to mind a very good cyclist I remember back in the 60's. Called Bill Holmes he was rated the best that Hull had ever produced. Anyone better since? Think he is still alive today. Had a Raleigh racing bike back in the fifties and was a member of a high school bike group that did rides on a Sunday. One or two rides to Scarborough but mainly to Brid and other seaside resorts.
One of our neighbours in the 1960's was a guy called Alan Creaser who along with Vic Smith were very good Thursday Road cyclists. I remember seeing them going out on their bikes for races. http://www.cyclingarchives.com/coureurfiche.php?coureurid=104671
Not sure if it's the same Bill Holmes but we had a Sales Director at Falcon Cycles in Brigg back in the early '80's who was a well known ex rider. I wasn't aware that he was from Hull, so that's why I'm not sure. If it is him, to my knowledge he is still alive.
Here are details. He rode at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 and had a 20 year racing career being a professional for about 5 of them. www.cyclingarchives.com/coureurfiche.php?coureurid=9163
Yes that's definitely him. It says he rode for the Falcon team in the '60's and once I saw the photo at the bottom, although it was probably taken 20 years before I knew him, there's no doubt at all.
