    Because West Ham want to "make a statement" this summer.

    Sometimes (actually, a lot of the time) the actions of other clubs really do make you appreciate the people running our club.

    West Ham do the same every year, get linked with bids for a load of players they will never get for large, but not large enough, sums of money then end up with someone the fans are unimpressed by. This year they were linked with Higuain, Bacca and the return of Tevez ffs

    I think a lot of teams are still short of signings, so despite the crazy amounts of money floating around there are some very sparse and very over-bloated squads about.

    Needs to be with a club for three years before 21 - think he joined Gillingham when he was already 19 so won't ever qualify as homegrown under the current rules unfortunately.

    100k ain't what it used to be, relative to revenues. That said, I'd be pretty nervous about Fonte receiving an extension beyond his current two years at that price...at some point, you're paying for past performance, with diminishing returns.
