Two way street, the club should have made more of an effort with barton or just said they wanted him off the wage bill. Either would have been better than the way they currently go about moving people on. i.e get into a prolonged contract dispute with them, and then try to say they wanted out. They couldn't lie straight in bed and that is the root of the problem. Every decent player who leaves is the same set of circumstances. I don't mind cost cutting to reduce our ridiculous debts personally. Just front up and stop causing mayhem.

I have to disagree. As much as want Ashley out of the club he's doing the right thing. The only thing this boils down to is money.
Carroll , Nolan and now Barton. It's high time the club were rid of mercenary's.I'm not saying Barton was all about money ( he's said himself it's not) but It
    played a major factor IMO

Don't think any of those mentioned left for money. They left because the club either didn't offer them a contract or accepted a bid. Simple as that for me. I think its fine for them to do so, I just don't like the way they go about it because its not a typical business. You have a sporting aspect to consider and creating a poor working environment just brings trouble as they are now finding out. Not that I agree with the tweeting, but I can understand why so many players are hacked off.

I'm sick and tired of people saying Barton should have doffed his cap at his employer and kept his mouth shut. I notice Radio Newcastle are taking the same line, doubtless concerned about securing future interviews with Pardew.

What he said was not extreme nor personally insulting, but basically things all fans suspected anyway. I for one am glad there are intelligent and articulate people like Barton around who will stand up to bullies like Ashley and Llambias.

I have a great deal of time for Joey and wish him well wherever he ends up.

Carroll - went from 30k~ a week with us to 80k a week with liverpool...

Nolan - wanted a (if I remember it right) 4 year extension, was offered 3 on same wage but with the last year incentive based, left to sign a 5 year deal with West Ham on more than what he was on at the time a reported 55k...

So which one of them didn't leave for the money exactly?

Nolan left because a deal on a new contract was agreed then withdrawn and re-jigged. Fair enough. Carroll left because the club accepted an outrageous bid and they told him they wanted to sell. You don't stay where you're not wanted in football. Both deals represented excellent financial deals for the club and were understandable given their desire to cut costs. The fact that the players leaving got better deals is a by-product and probably representative of the obvious abilities/success with our club. People can dress it up however they like, the starting point of any deal is the club accepting a bid. If not they'd still be here surely.

Why would they be kicking and screaming? They've been told they're not wanted by one team, and told they are by another. Life of a football now. Money is a motivation on all sides for sure. I wouldn't expect any different, **** we all love money! I think all of these three guys and Jose have been loyal to the club while they were on the books. Barton has marked his card with the twitter lark but he still cares about the club.

I'm not sure who you're referring to there. I know one of their 'pundits' personally and can confirm the views he airs on Radio Newcastle are exactly in line with what he says to me during our chats. He's not the type to worry about what NUFC think about what he says I can assure you :)

Will you still be so glad when we are fighting against relegation, with a buch of foreign players still acclimatising to English football, and a manager who has lost the respect of the older players, who see him as Ashley's puppet?

Why? For the millionth time, if he REALLY wanted to stay that badly, he should have kept his gob shut and built bridges with the board. Instead, he decided say things which rubbed the clubs reputation through the mud in the national press, and ensured that he would never recieve a contract offer in a million years.

You can **** over the 'principle' of Barton speaking his mind all you like, but in the real world, it's just caused a right load of ****ing hassle for everyone.

I'm gutted too. I'd love to wind the clock back and keep Barton before him and the board fell out. However, I'm just looking at the current situation. He's damaged the clubs reputation and he's caused very low morale in the dressing room with his outbursts (especially with the new players like Cabaye who NEED to stay and play well). It's an irrepairable situation, so unfortunately, the sooner he goes, the better, so I'm glad the free transfer has been offered.

If you think Barton, one man, is the SOLE reason why we've not only stayed up, but also achieved a solid mid-table position, then you're an idiot.

If the outburst at Leeds is true, then he's starting to infest the squad with low morale, and that's FAR more likely to cause league troubles and a relegation threat compared to him leaving.

We have new players like Cabaye for christs sake. He's top class and so vital for next season. Barton having a go at him in the dressing room is just not on whatsoever. He should be ashamed of himself.

I've been saying the same thing at work since this happened, if Barton loved the club passionately, he would have learnt by now, (As he said himself, he's a more mature, grow man than before) that he should have kept schdum, and just played his football and let out his aggression on the field, that way he would still be here.

In some ways I feel he's engineered a move for himself, the manipulative git that he is. He's come out public... saying stuff the fans are saying to win them over, so it appears that MA and DL is in the wrong again. He knows exactly what he's done, tbh I wouldn't be suprised if his agent was 'in' on it too.

Stalling a new deal... Twitter rant ****e... Club no longer needs him... Fined 2wks wages... On a free...

I do disagree with the way DL is running things... i mean for the sake of a 12 month period...if Barton loved the club he would have signed on the dotted line straight up!! Instead he and agent decided to bicker with the club about a 12 month period.

We are stuck with MA & DL unfortunately, but we have to accept that fact. Support the team. Why we continue to sing about MA directly...indirectly clearly makes him pissed... 'Ashley, Ashley sign him up' etc, because we are not offering a new deal to Barton, he gets his ego trip and twitter ****es the place. Now its sour grapes for the fans, yet again... Do you honestly think Barton will give a toss about Newcastle in 6 months time when he's playing Champions League footy. No.

Although i thank him for playing every game with heart, he was paid to do, and i expected no less. So **** him, the arse bent twit.

Problem is Chappaz this is all rumour and conjecture about the dressing room. So it can not be really used as an argument against him at this stage. With regards to relegation I'd have to say the current squad is weaker than the one which started last season. Therefore I'd have to say we are more likely to be relegated than last year. Particularly given the freak nature of last season and the slow starts by the likes of Liverpool. Of course the window is not shut and the club could make two or three top class signings with some PL experience to raise our level. I think people are just thinking Jose will go and that will be the end of our business. Even the most positive supporters would be worried.

I know, that's why I said IF it's true. I have a strong feeling it is though. Something definitely happened. Even Willie McKay confirmed it.

As for the squad, that's a load of crap. It's much stronger than last seasons.

    Out:

    Carroll
    Nolan
    Barton soon

    In:

    Ba
    Cabaye
    Marveaux
    Abeid
    Gosling
    Vuckic
    Ferguson

At West Ham, Ba had just as good a goalscoring record as Carroll.
Cabaye is far superior compared to Nolan and probably better than Barton.
Marveaux is a good pacy winger
Abeid is becoming a real talent who could make a step up to the first team when he was only ever expected to play in the reserves
    Gosling is a good player
Vuckic is a top future talent
Ferguson has came through and proven himself as a good player

Compared to the very start of last season, we have much more depth, much more quality and many more quality players to choose from. IF the club brings in another striker and a replacement for Barton, then we'll be even stronger.

    There's a definite improvement.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I'd consider Ferguson/Gosling/Vuckic already part of last seasons options. Better players the two young ones, and Gosling has plenty to prove. On the fence with him on what little I saw at Everton. The other four are good signings. Cabaye in particular has great pedigree. Better than Barton, not at this stage as a PL player. Barton is very good hence a number of Arsenal and Chelsea fans are happy to take him. Ba is not comparable to Carroll in talent in my humble opinion. I think Carroll is a bit special. Ba is very injury prone with a chronic knee problems if other clubs medicals are to be believed. Abeid I like and he is what we needed for squad depth, hungry young players. Marveaux has quality but also a fitness issue to overcome. Worrying the number of ops he's had on the area but fingers crossed I suppose. Where this seasons squad loses out for me is goals. At present we have no guaranteed source of goals. With Carroll, others doubted his ability to get goals but I think we all knew he couldn't be stopped if quality was delivered. His junior pedigree suggested it was where he belonged anyway. We have also shed other players who although not great quality were squad members. I'm happy to give youth a go but we have to do it in a nuturing manner like a well run club would. We hurt Taylor with too much too soon. We've also undoubtedly lost a huge amount of english and pl savvy in Carroll, Nolan, Barton, Campbell. Not just on the pitch but off it. It is important when times are rough as a club of our current standing is bound to endure at this level.
