Tim Sherwood has thrown his hat in the ring to be Sunderland’s next manager if, as expected, Sam Allardyce gets the England job. Allardyce and his club are waiting to hear back from the Football Association, who have tried to carry out an exhaustive searchfor Roy Hodgson’s replacement. Hull City’s Steve Bruce , Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe and the United States of America’s former Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann are contenders for the job, but Allardyce is widely seen as the favourites. With their new season kicking off at Manchester City on August 13, Sunderland will want to move quickly if they do lose Allardyce – they are yet to make a signing this summer – and former Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur boss Sherwood has gone public with his interest. “Absolutely,” he said, when asked directly in a radio interview. “You never know until you get in. You have to wait until you get in there. But, yes, I want to get back into work, but only with the right opportunity.” Sherwood’s abrasive style won him many fans in his early time as a manager, but his chairmen were less convinced. He replaced Andre Villas-Boas as Tottenham coach in 2013-14, and won half of his 28 games in charge. But it was only enough to see Spurs to sixth in the table and he was sacked at the end of the season, a third of the way into his 18-month contract. Sherwood led Villa to the 2015 FA Cup final, having taken over in February. But his aggressive style appeared to wear thin in his second season, and by the time he made way for Remi Garde in October, the Midlands club already looked doomed to relegation. Others would appear to be above him in the pecking order for the Stadium of Light job, namely David Moyes, Burnley’s Sean Dyche – a previous target – and former Everton manager Roberto Martinez.
FFS indeed! I'd be gutted if we ended up with either of Sherwood or Martinez. TBH I'd not be overjoyed with Moyes or Dyche either, but I can't think who we'd get that would be better.

I was listening to the interview this morning on the way to work. It was a massively loaded question. Of course he'd take the job if he was offered it. He won't be in the running at all IMO.

Nads will be happy, he's a Sherwood fan. Jury is still out for me, I think he's too much of a clown like Holloway, but I don't blame him for Villa's mess, no manager would have kept them up.

Personally, I am hoping that England do turn to Bruce. Firstly, to keep SA and secondly to see if they can get even worse under Bruce.
Not one for me - he needs to drop a league or 2 and learn his trade. Might come good in a few years time. I think the best we can hope for, should Sam get the job, is Moyes. Yeah, he had a tough time at Man Utd but did a great job of stabilising and keeping steady at Everton. That would do me for the next 3 to 5 seasons by which time we might look to move up another level with the right successor.
I'll put it out there that I actually think he'll come good one day. There were signs at Spurs that he had something there, especially the way he had Adebayor playing which no one else has done in the past 5 years. Agree with the comment above saying he should drop down a league or two.
Sorry but everyone who's had adebayor playing for a contract in the past 5 years has had Adebayor playing like that. Every time his contract is up, he puts in 6 months of good football - then turns to absolute dogshit when he gets comfortable again! Nowt to do with Sherwood! Just Adebayor! I don't understand why Giggs never gets a mention. Ok he might not be the nicest fella in his private life and it would be a gamble of sorts but his contacts alone aswell as everything he must have learned from previous managers must be worth something? Tbh Moyes is a gamble too. He might be one of those managers that for whatever reason does fantastic at one club but struggles everywhere else...
