Realistically, it's not really up to us. We aren't limiting ourselves when we sign young players and then they get great and leave for a big profit. We are already limited because we can't attract top players. So getting good players who can become top players is the next best option

If the club keeps progressing, then maybe in two years we finally will be able to keep them. If not, at least we get a great season or two from them and then reap a big profit.

And tbf, this sort of thing happens at the very best clubs as well, it's just more a matter of choice for them. The peak for players is not much more than 2-3 years anyway. And managers and tactics change. So you can't expect most players to stick around their whole careers anyway.

And the really great clubs can afford to be really picky and only take the best. They might sign a guy who turns out to be the third best player in the world at that position... but if they already have the best or get a chance to sign the best, then that third best player will get moved on. Look at how many great players Barcelona have developed and still got sold because they weren't Lionel Messi-calibre.

Depending on what formation(s) Puel has down for us, and whether the links to Amavi are true or not (or any LB for that matter), then I would potentially be open to loaning Targett to Newcastle for the season.

But I wouldn't want to sell him, and nor can we afford to go into a season - particularly one which extra EL games - with only Bertrand.

There is an obsession with pace in the modern game and at full back especially.

Can Matty become a top level player without it?

I don't know. And I don't think that's the only question mark either. But he's shown me enough if his short career so far for me to not want us to give up on him and sell him already.

A season of regular football for Newcastle could be just the thing for him though.

A loan move would be good, but then we would have to buy someone in ourselves and then he would be third choice next season, unless we sold Bertrand <yikes>

The trouble with selling Matty now is that it feels like he is being treated like a bit of a commodity - imo

    "If the club progresses"

That's exactly it. We need to progress so that players want to stay rather than are forced to because of the time left on their contract. My arguement is that to get to this next stage we must try all we can to keep hold of these young players for longer than we currently have done.

You also mentioned the peak for players is 2/3 years. The peak for a player isn't decided by how long they're at a club but rather their age. So if we sign them at 22 and sell them at 25, they will not have reached their peak with us. What we have done with VVD is the way to go from here I believe.

Don't think you mean it as I've read it, but don't believe players are forced to leave.

I guess we allow them to be tempted, but we kind of have to accept our place in the food chain. Hopefully we can stop the multiple exits in the coming seasons

It was unclear. It should have read like that.

Can see your point, but all the players that have left have come from Southampton or from similar sized clubs (celtic being a big fish in a puddle). only ryan has come from a top team, and after seeing that being part of a big club can be pretty ****ty, hopefully he will see that being first choice for a smaller club has its benifits. if we can get hold of young players that could not force their way into top clubs but want to get their careers back on track then I'm all for it. if they get sold for double after 3 yrs of good service then so be it, there are always more hungry young players that the black box can pick out. Manes agent from day one said he sees Southampton as a stepping stone club (maybe should have had another full on year here and a big club would have come in for him), he was always going to leave, the same as Vic

I just think that if we kept hold of these players for a little longer and kept a consistent team we would progress to the next level. We have done brilliantly to get this far and the system clearly works. But to advance further I think it is important to keep our top players.

When/if we do advance to the next step (Consistent and competitive in Europe) then hopefully players will no longer look at us as a stepping stone!

Newcastle signing Targett would be like when we signed Clyne from Palace.

They totally exploited his weaknesses in our game at St james last season, and then want to sign him anyway.

(Adkins did the same after targetting Clyne, putting lambert up against him on far post crosses).

Would think for Saints a loan would make more sense IF (and only if) and new LB is on the cards coming in. If no new LB is on the cards, we should keep Targett to play in Europe. ALso he's still eligible for the JPT!

Unless things have changed in a few months. He is still very much seen as highly rated at the club.

Matty needs to practice whipping in crosses from 30 m. its true he is not the fastest, but he is still pretty quick. Baines was pretty handy and he is slower than Matty, Beckham never got to the byline, receive the ball on the halfway line jog 20 m looking for the runner and whip it in. Matty has a good delivery, but he needs a top delivery if he is to get past ryan. Interesting that Ryan was played as a CB instead of matty, who is probably better suited to this position than Ryan
