Top Jockey Kieren Fallon retired today due to depression. He couldn't even announce it himself such is his condition. I think he was at an age where he should be retiring anyway. Complex area, depression. One very interesting practitioner, whose name escapes me, said something very interesting about it. He essentially dismissed what he referred to as pseudoscience and suggested from his own forty years experience in this area, that every single case he had ever been involved with had always lead back to a single cause - the loss of or lack of a soulmate.
It is a terrible illness, seems strange that he has retired because of it, as normally it is after Sportsmen and women retire it can hit them hard. Maybe it was the thought of having to retire that triggered it with him. Hopefully he is getting the help he needs.
Second this, I thought maybe he had depressive issues as he was an up and down type of character in racing, very unpredictable but also a great jockey at his best. Hope he gets the right help too.
He stopped getting the big rides a fair few years ago now, racing sort of retired him. He's had lots of trouble with drugs and alcohol over the years. Quite a self destructive character but a bloody good jockey. I remember when he got banned at Beverley after he pulled another jockey off his horse and tried to deck him.
No It would be if it wasn't ironic that humour is seen as a way to cheer people up. There was no malice or ill will in my post...
Don't know much about Horse racing Chazz to be fair, but seems all sports have these very talented characters such as Gaza, Besty who are super talented but have a weakness in their character. Watching Kyrgios and Murray play tonight Kyrgios is extremely talented but he seems to have this self destruct button.
I've no doubt. If the bloke had fallen off his horse and broken his leg a bit of humour wouldn't be out of place, it's just that I think depression is a particularly pernicious illness that no-one really understands and needs to be treated sensitively. That's all.
Some titles of threads say enough to me as how to behave when commenting on them ... Like the RIP thread. Some just think every thread is open season for ridicule .... I have a close relative suffering from bad depression, also a very good friend tried to take her own life. It is bad **** and something I would certainly not want to witness as close as I have. You really do feel helpless to help them. Sorry for the rant.
Being an insensitive arsehole looking for a cheap laugh never cheers anyone up, malice intended or not.
Depression's been a way of life me. I don't know what I'd do without it. I think it started when I first went to Boothferry park.
