Celtic Linked With English International; Why He’d A Brilliant Signing For The Hoops

When we talk about players who badly need to take a different path in their career, Steven Caulker would certainly make the list. The 24-year-old is still paying the price for some poor decisions made in his career which held him back from becoming the player he was once destined to be. The Scottish Daily Record claims that the Englishman is set to be offered a lifeline in bringing his career back on the right track by his former manager Brendan Rodgers who himself has to restore his reputation at Celtic.

Queens Park Rangers are still struggling in the Championship and they still have some big earners on their books and Caulker is one of them. The club had high ambitions back when they were in the Premier League but things did not work out despite some big money signings and Caulker was one of them. The Scottish Daily Record claims that QPR boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is keen to cut off the extensive wage bill of Caulker off the club’s books and Celtic have registered their interest in the former Spurs defender.

Caulker spent the last season on loan at Southampton and Liverpool but managed one Premier League appearance the whole time. The 24-year-old desperately needs a club where he can afford regular playing time and Celtic can offer him that. The Hoops are looking light on numbers at the back with just Sviatchenko remaining as the only fit centre-back at Parkhead while both Simunovic and Boyata are struggling to come back from injuries.

Caulker will be able to add quite a lot of top-level experience to the Celtic backline. For a player who is just 24, Caulker boasts 218 first team appearances combined for all the clubs he’s played for till date. The QPR defender has a wealth of experience in the Premier League with 123 Premier League appearances to his name. Proving himself in the Scottish Premiership should be easier than competing in the English top flight for Caulker and a loan deal makes more sense for the English international.

Another plus for the Englishman is that he worked under Rodgers and had one of his best seasons at Swansea City on loan from Spurs. He forged a formidable partnership with Ashley Williams at the heart of defence during the Welsh side’s first season in the Premier League.

Caulker has a point to prove that he can become a player capable of getting regular first-team action in the Premier League and if Celtic are offering him that opportunity, he should take it with his eyes closed. Despite the good spells at Cardiff and Swansea it hasn’t lasted more than a season and a move to Celtic can really benefit him.

Caulker, with his Premier League experience, will definitely become a regular name on the team sheet at Celtic on a weekly basis. The player badly needs it and Celtic would also benefit from having a defender of Caulker’s calibre. It’s a move that makes sense for both parties.

    The Daily Record.

Scottish Champions Celtic and Newcastle United have both been linked with Queens Park Rangers’ centre half Steven Caulker according to The Daily Record.

Despite Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink revealing his desire to keep Caulker at the club beyond the summer, the interest in him is yet to nullify.

Crystal Palace were reportedly close to signing Caulker however with Palace’s attention turning to West Ham United’s James Tomkins, it appears that the interest in Caulker has quietened.

The latest club that has been linked with 24-year-old centre half are Celtic, where it appears that Brendan Rodgers is looking to strengthen his side. Rodgers has previously worked with Caulker at Swansea and it appears that Rodgers is now keen to bring him north of the border.

However Newcastle are in the driving seat for Caulker’s signature as they are capable of paying the entirety of Caulker’s £30,000 a week wages and this may persuade Queens Park Rangers to allow Caulker to join Newcastle rather than Celtic.

Queens Park Rangers fans, how do you feel about the news? Would you like to see Steven Caulker remain at QPR? Is his departure inevitable? Would you rather see Caulker join Newcastle or Celtic? Who would you like to see come in to replace him? Let us hear your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below!

Glasgow seems like a fine move for a man with alcohol problems.

It would certainly be a brilliant signing for the Hoops if he went to Celtic - the blue and white ones that is :)
